Job Summary

 

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is seeking a Research Laboratory Specialist Intermediate for the Duffy Laboratory. The Duffy Lab studies the ecology and evolution of host-symbiont interactions, with a particular focus on Daphnia and their microbial symbionts. This position would involve full time work on Daphnia and their symbionts.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Developing, designing, and conducting research projects on Daphnia and their symbionts, including projects in the laboratory and the field, as well as projects used advanced molecular approaches (digital PCR, microbiome sequencing). This will include making key decisions independently in the design and execution of these projects, as well as maintaining detailed records of experimental protocols and all data. [33%]
  • Analyzing and interpreting data from research projects, as well as preparing manuscripts, preparing code for review, and presenting results at scientific meetings. [33%]
  • Training and mentoring others in the laboratory, including undergraduate students and graduate students. This will involve initially training them as they work on collaborative projects, then helping them develop more independent projects (e.g., honors theses). [24%]
  • Troubleshooting problems in the field and lab, as well as recommending and implementing solutions. [10%]

Required Qualifications*

 

Bachelor's in biology or related field of science and 4-5 years of related research experience is required. Experience working with Daphnia and their symbionts, including field collections, identification of bacterial and eukaryotic symbionts, experience carrying out infection assays, and an ability to conduct molecular analyses (e.g., PCR, sequencing) are also required. Experience carrying out analyses of life table experiments, plankton field data, and population dynamical data is also required, as is experience mentoring undergraduate researchers.

Desired Qualifications*

 

Masters or PhD in Biology or related field. Experience mentoring graduate students is preferred.

Additional Information

 

This is a one-year term-limited position with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance, availability of work, and availability of funding.  The position requires an in-person laboratory presence in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
