Job Summary

 

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in the philosophy of artificial intelligence (AI), beginning August 25, 2026. This is a university year appointment and will be at the level of assistant professor or tenured associate or full professor.

We are especially interested in accomplished scholars who work at the intersection of philosophy of AI and cognitive science and/or philosophy of AI and ethics, broadly construed to include the normative social or political dimensions of AI. This position is part of a cluster of four new AI-related positions in the Departments of Philosophy, Linguistics, Psychology, and Psychiatry, and all four faculty will have the opportunity to affiliate with the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science. We seek a scholar who will be able to collaborate with individuals from these units in order to address fundamental questions in the philosophy of AI. In addition, the successful candidate for this position must have a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service.

Responsibilities*

 

The normal teaching load for research-active faculty in LSA is four courses per academic year. Areas of teaching responsibility include introductory and upper-division undergraduate classes and graduate seminars.
