Course Description

 

This posting applies to open positions in Physics undergraduate courses for Fall 2025:
    
    Physics 151: Physics for Life Sciences Lab I

GSIs for Physics lab sections must also attend a required weekly meeting from 11:55 am to 1:00 pm on Mondays.

Other courses may also be available based on the needs of the department.

Responsibilities*

 

GSI duties vary by course, but may include teaching discussion or lab sections, helping prepare course lectures and other class materials, grading student assessments, holding office hours, and regular GSI meetings. Candidates should expect to perform these duties in-person. Specific tasks and duties for each position will be outlined in the fraction calculation form.

***All first time GSIs (those who have not previously taught at the University of Michigan) will be required to attend CRLT's Teaching Orientation as a term of their employment. ***

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Must be currently enrolled as a graduate student in good standing at the University of Michigan
  • Possess the ability to effectively teach and evaluate undergraduate students
  • Possess broad knowledge of varied aspects of physics
  • To be appointed as a GSI or GSSA, a graduate student must also be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours during the semester of their employment

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion in the classroom
  • Previous GSI experience with favorable student evaluations
  • Previous GSI experience in Physics courses
  • For international students, a passing score on the OET or an OET waiver
  • LSA student enrolled in a graduate program

Modes of Work

 

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Decision Making Process

 

Applications are reviewed and positions are assigned by the Physics Student Services Office.

Selection Process

 

The Physics Student Services Office will review applications that include all required materials. Selected candidates will be contacted to complete the second part of the application.

The number of GSIs hired will depend on enrollment in the courses listed above.

Criteria for GSI Selection: Enrollment demand, GSI stated preference, relevant experience, previous teaching experience in the Physics department.
