The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

DPSS Museum Security is a full-service public safety department dedicated to meeting the needs of the University of Michigan community. Our officers are highly trained security professionals equipped to serve all members of our community. We manage all security operations for the Museum of Art, the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, the Museum of Natural History, and the School of Dentistry. We may also provide security services for other university buildings and events.
 

The Museum Security Department reports to the Chief of Police.
 

Work schedules may include weekends, afternoons, holidays, and unanticipated overtime. This is a uniform position in accordance with the DPSS uniform dress code. There will be both stationary and foot patrol assignments, and building-specific responsibilities.

• Respond calmly and effectively in emergencies, utilizing appropriate emergency equipment and protocols.
• Identify and mitigate safety hazards and potential criminal activity through vigilant patrols of museum facilities and surrounding grounds.

• High School or GED equivalent and one (1) year of experience in a security, fire, military, customer service, or emergency management field OR, an Associate or Bachelor Degree equivalent to experience in related field
• Can assist emergency response personnel with maneuvering persons who may be combative, intoxicated, or unconscious, and can restrain someone
• Skillset in handling emergency situations and using associated equipment
• You can perform life saving techniques such as CPR and First Aid
• A valid driver's license and a driving record with less than 6 points
• You must pass a comprehensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, physical and drug screening

This position will work onsite.

All members of the DPSS team are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report offenses that come to your attention.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters concerning wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
