Department Summary:

The University of Michigan (UM) University Health & Counseling (UHC), a unit of Student Life, is a large ambulatory, a multispecialty health clinic that serves a large and diverse student body of more than 45,000 students, as well as UM faculty and staff. Position Summary:

UHC Laboratory obtains specimens for the department as well as Michigan Medicine Laboratories and other reference labs. The
Phlebotomist provides exceptional customer service to patients, our UHS Laboratory team, and all UHS colleagues. The Phlebotomist
supports the UHC Lab by obtaining blood specimens from patients, preparing specimens for distribution to various reference labs and
performing front desk responsibilities.

Responsibilities*

 

Distribution (60%)

  • Centrifuge, aliquot and package specimens
  • Troubleshoot missing orders and results
  • Bring specimens to proper areas for testing
  • Notify the Reportable Disease Group of any Reportable Infections
  • Pickup specimens from clinics in building and bring them to lab for processing
  • Centrifuge cleaning

Phlebotomy and Front Desk Duties (40%)

  • Obtain blood samples through venipuncture
  • Answer phones to answer general lab questions and route to appropriate area as necessary
  • Communicate with providers to clarify orders and collection requirements
  • Keep blood drawing area supplies stocked
  • Always maintain HIPPA standards
  • Communicate with patients via phone and portal when repeat collections are necessary

Required Qualifications*

 
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum one year of phlebotomy experience

Working Conditions:

  • Monday through Friday 8am-5pm. Rotating Saturday's 9-1. On occasion, employee will perform venipuncture in the clinic outside of the lab.

Physical Requirements:

  • Moves throughout the building to collect samples at times.  

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the Service Employees International Union - Healthcare Michigan (SEIU), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2025 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY25-26 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

Relocation will not be offered for this position.
