Responsibilities*

 

The fellow works closely with the faculty director of the Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS) to develop and oversee projects in healthcare operations. The fellow's primary purpose is to provide CoE students with deep, multidisciplinary, experiential learning opportunities that support and extend their technical growth to include all of the additional skills needed to be effective problem solvers in a complex and ill-defined environment.

  • Mentors students in solving real-world healthcare problems, including serving as a resource for students to address both technical and professional challenges 
  • Leads the definition, design, development, documentation, and deployment of healthcare systems operations projects, with the guidance of the faculty director
  • Conducts communications and observations with Michigan Medicine collaborators and other stakeholders to identify needs, inform project scope, and gather important information and data related to the project needs 
  • Designs and executes technical analysis for projects, including data analysis, data visualization, optimization modeling, and simulation 
  • Contributes to internal process improvement for the management and execution of CHEPS projects  


     

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Graduate-level degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or related fields with a demonstrated interest in healthcare operations OR a graduate-level degree in a healthcare field (epidemiology, public health, biomedical engineering, etc.) with demonstrated interest and experience in data analytics, operations research, and/or lean process improvement 
  • Quantitative research skills, including experience processing, analyzing, and visualizing data
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical communication
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and manage time effectively
     

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting, including past work or research experience on healthcare projects or experience working, volunteering, or shadowing in a clinical environment
  • Experience with Tableau or other data visualization/business intelligence software
  • Experience with programming in C++, Python, and/or SQL
  • Experience working with students in a collaborative classroom or research setting
  • Experience working within and leading multidisciplinary teams

This is a one-year term-limited position with possible renewal based on funding.
