Job Summary

 

University Health Service is currently seeking a Primary Care Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to diagnose and treat students, faculty, staff, retirees and others in need of urgent, continuing, and preventative medical care.

The University of Michigan (UM) University Health Service (UHS), a unit of Student Life, is a large ambulatory, multispecialty health clinic that serves a large and diverse student body of more than 50,000 students, as well as UM faculty and staff. UHS provides clinical services throughout its primary care and specialty clinics, as well as health and wellness education and promotion. Responsibilities*

 

Under physician supervision, the NP will be expected to perform the following responsibilities:

Patient contact (80%)    
Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and provide consultations to patients age 10 + with a wide variety of acute and chronic health concerns that present in an ambulatory setting. The scope of care includes comprehensive primary care including all common mental health conditions, PREP/PEP, gender affirming care, and non-operative gynecological care to both students and non-students. Provide weekend coverage on a rotating basis. Maintain compliance with billing and coding practices. Participate in the management of on-site medical emergency procedures. Perform common minor office procedures, including I&D, laceration, and LARC.

Administrative/non-patient contact (20%)
Provide indirect patient care via phone calls, patient portal, and other modes of communication. 
Attend and actively participate in on-site Continuing Medical Education activities and other outside CME activities relevant to specific area of training.
Participate in the administrative functioning of UHS through various committees, work-groups or special projects as directed by the Medical Director or designee.
Complete regular peer review and quality improvement activities as coordinated through the Primary Care clinics and the Quality Improvement Committee.

Required Qualifications*

 

Required Qualifications (NP): 

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification as a Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioner or Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Graduate of a Nurse Practitioner program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB)
  • DEA license, or ability to obtain DEA license within 30 days of start date required
  • AHA approved BLS certification
  • Minimum 2 years of recent experience as an NP (within the last 5 years) in an ambulatory care primary care setting providing continuity of care to patients
  • Clinical experience relevant to the UHS scope of practice (e.g. adolescent health, office-based surgical procedures, sports medicine, gynecologic health)
  • Experience with contraception education/prescriptions, including emergency contraception
  • Experience in office-based orthopedic care
  • Experience with risk assessment and safety planning
     

Required Qualifications (PA):

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required  
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS certification
  • Minimum 2 years of recent experience as an NP (within the last 5 years) in an ambulatory care primary care setting providing continuity of care to patients
  • Clinical experience relevant to the UHS scope of practice (e.g. adolescent health, office-based surgical procedures, sports medicine, gynecologic health)
  • Experience with contraception education/prescriptions, including emergency contraception
  • Experience in office-based orthopedic care
  • Experience with risk assessment and safety planning

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Proficiency using MiChart or EPIC electronic health record
  • Bi-lingual or multi-lingual skills
  • Experience managing common mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, insomnia, and ADHD
  • Experience with office-based surgical procedures 
  • Experience in motivational interviewing
  • Knowledge and experience with principles of trauma-informed care
     

Work Schedule

 

Hours/week: 40 hours per week 
Shift/Hours: Regular daytime hours, with occasional evening and weekend expectations. Start and finish times TBD

Provide care via telehealth services as appropriate
