To prepare and paint interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, structures and fixtures.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Repair surface before painting, filling holes and cracks with putty or patching plaster.
  • Select, mix and blend paint to meet color, consistency, surface composition and durability criteria.
  • Roll or brush paint onto interior or exterior surfaces, including walls, trim, machinery, furniture, cabinets, smokestacks, and structural steel work.
  • Finish new furniture or refinish old furniture, including desks, chairs, cabinets and their components, alternating spray application of stain, varnish, lacquer or shellac with a sanding or buffering operation.
  • Hang wallpaper.
  • Remove wallpaper using steam unit.
  • Prepare surface for painting by washing, scraping, brushing, sanding and sealing.
  • Cut, fit, install and seal glass in windows and doors.
  • Hang or lay drop cloth to protect against dripping and splashing.
  • Clean rollers, brushes and other equipment.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders.
  • Instruct and direct the work of assistants.
  • Prepare records and service reports to materials and time expended.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is received from a designated official.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Reasonable recent experience in the painting of interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and structures is necessary.
  • Considerable knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in brush and roller painting is necessary.
  • Ability to mix, match, harmonize and contrast colors is desirable.
  • Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding is desirable.
  • Reasonable manual strength and dexterity is desirable.
  • Skill in the preparation and painting of interior and exterior surfaces is necessary.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Experience in the application of Elastomeric based material that would be used in various types of wall assemblies, including backer material for this process.
  • Experience with and proper application of a variety of caulks (acrylic, silicone, intumescent, elastomeric, etc.).
  • Experience and ability to joint tape drywall seams as well as bed coat, finish coat, skim coat in preparation for painting.
  • Experience with quick dry drywall compound (Easy Sand 20) or accelerator for quick turn over projects.
  • Knowledge and field experience with the use and maintenance of airless paint sprayers.
  • Field experience with the setup of the various methods of workplace containment.
  • Familiar with the proper PPE that is required for various field applications listed above.
  • Work experience in firestopping.

Modes of Work

 

Onsite

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan. 

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Shift/Hours/Days: 1st Shift/7am-3:30pm/Monday - Friday
