The Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) serves as the principal resource for faculty, staff, and students who seek to engage with schools on issues of higher education access and success toward developing a diverse community of scholars at the University of Michigan. CEO seeks energetic and knowledgeable candidates to offer support and educational services to rising 12th-grade students as part of its GEAR UP program. GEAR UP summer staff will provide support for overnight campus visits, educational programs, training resources, and assistance through workshops, information sessions, and distribution of materials. Additionally, the GEAR UP Staff will collect data and conduct surveys as needed.

Expectations

As a GEAR UP Summer staff member, you will represent the Center for Educational Outreach, yourself, and other team members in a manner that provides a positive reflection of our institutional vision, goals, mission, and efforts. You will establish positive relationships among community leaders, youth, as well as University of Michigan students, faculty, and staff. Must be able to plan, prepare, design, and lead mini-lessons, workshops, and panels in subjects related, but not limited to socio-emotional skills, non-cognitive skills, financial aid, and scholarship access, the college application process, and college and career decision-making; must be comfortable speaking in front of a group and sharing personal experiences as a college student. Additionally, there will be times when you are asked to work on some weekends and during evening hours.

Duration

This is a temporary position, starting June 23, 2025, and ending August 8, 2025. This position will require evening hours, including supervising high school students during an overnight experience in a residence hall at the University of Michigan (U-M).

What is GEAR UP? 

The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) initiative, housed in the Center for Educational Outreach, is one of the largest and most effective early intervention programs focused on increasing the college and career readiness of low-income students in communities nationwide. GEAR UP is a highly competitive grant program that helps empower local partnerships comprised of K-12 schools, institutions of higher education, state agencies, and community organizations to achieve three strategic goals: (1) increasing the postsecondary expectations and readiness of students; (2) improving high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment rates; and (3) raising the knowledge of postsecondary options, preparation, and financing among students and families.

• Assist in the development and delivery of pre-college workshops for high school students via a variety of methods, including teaching, workshop facilitation, tutoring/mentoring, etc.
• Assist staff with providing capacity building support to both U-M and community partners to strengthen their outreach practice and support of youth.
• Assist in the assessment process, including coordination of activities, collecting and documenting data, and compiling reports.
• Perform general office tasks (typing, copying, filing, organizing, assembling information packets, mailings, data entry, etc.)
• Perform other duties as assigned by the GEAR UP Program Manager.
• Must be available to work evening hours, including occasional weekends as needed.

• Competency with computers and their applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the Internet.
• Demonstrated experience in creating and maintaining databases and entering data. 

• Prior experience in educational outreach is a plus.
• Involvement in clubs and community organizations.
• The ability and willingness to speak positively and authentically about your college experience.
• A positive, caring, and personal attitude.
• Demonstrate a willingness to learn.
