Job Summary

 

Basic Functions
The Pre-Health Academic Advisor specializes in supporting students who are exploring the health professions and preparing applications to medical, dental, veterinary, and other health career professional programs. They are expected to work with students at every stage of interest in the Pre-Professional process, including advising and referring to appropriate university resources when necessary. This advisor is also expected to collaborate with a team of academic, major, and professional advisors across the university to provide support for students within and outside of LSA.  

Pre-Health academic advisors in the Newnan Academic Advising Center and are responsible for assisting students in exploring the health professions and helping identify alternative educational paths and courses of action.

Requisite to the role, the pre-health advisor is expected to maintain a comprehensive and current awareness of the requirements, issues, opportunities, and trends that attend preparation for the health professions and to develop and maintain strong, professionally appropriate relationships with representatives from other campus units, graduate and professional schools, and organizations that might facilitate the development and promulgation of this information.  

The Pre-Health Academic Advisor will design and facilitate workshops, presentations, and group advising sessions on topics relevant to students pursuing careers in the health professions. They will support students in assessing their progress through the exploration, preparation, and application phases, helping them navigate the wide range of Pre-Health pathways. This role also includes maintaining ongoing, supportive communication that fosters student growth and development. Additionally, the advisor is expected to actively contribute to a culture that is inclusive, welcoming, and responsive to the diverse identities and experiences of both students and staff.

Importantly, the pre-health advisor engages undergraduate students with guidance that is thoughtfully grounded in the context of a strong liberal arts education, emphasizing the academic, co-curricular, and developmental experiences it encompasses. In addition to advising responsibilities, the pre-health advisor serves as a liaison to specific academic departments and plays an active role in advancing the professional work and collaborative culture of the Center.

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) is the largest college at the University of Michigan, enrolling the majority of U-M's undergraduate students. The Newnan Academic Advising Center plays a central role in supporting and engaging these students throughout their academic journey. Newnan advisors prioritize each student's unique needs and interests, offering personalized guidance as they navigate their academic paths and uncover meaningful opportunities within LSA. In addition to this individualized support, Newnan provides specialized advising for students across the college who are pursuing pre-law and pre-health pathways. Through a combination of best practices in advising, innovative programming, and experiential learning, we help students and alumni explore their interests, prepare effectively, and successfully apply to professional programs in law and health.

Responsibilities*

 

The Pre-Health Advisor works to support the Newnan Academic Advising Center's goals, vision, and mission as they align with College and Institutional priorities.


Pre-Health Student Advising (Group/Individual)

  • Support students in reflecting on their academic interests, co-curricular experiences, and potential pre-health career paths.
  • Guide students in connecting their coursework to the broader goals of a liberal arts education.
  • Advise and mentor students preparing for application to health-related professional schools.
  • Clearly communicate College and University policies, procedures, programs, and resources.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource and make appropriate referrals to campus offices and support services.
  • Assist students with course selection and planning during orientation and registration periods.
  • Encourage students to consider new opportunities and academic options aligned with their goals, growth, and development.

Communication and Technology

  • Maintain timely and accurate records of advising interactions, referrals, exceptions to standard procedures, and decisions impacting students' degree progress.
  • Communicate regularly with advisees via email throughout their academic journey at U-M, ensuring consistent support and follow-up.
  • Respond promptly to student inquiries and academic progress reports, providing guidance and resources as needed.
  • Proactively alert students to academic opportunities and options that align with their personal and professional development.
  • Conduct targeted outreach to students, and share relevant, cohort-specific information using various advising tools.
  • Collaborate and communicate with faculty, staff, and academic administrators as needed to support student success.

Campus Partner and Community Engagement

  • Represent Newnan and/or the College by establishing and maintaining relationships with both internal and external schools, programs, and professional organizations related to the health professions.
  • Contribute to the design and/or delivery of pre-health programming that responds to the current needs of students as well as current trends.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of print and web resources.
  • Represent Newnan and/or the college at recruitment and retention activities and events.
  • Serve on committees, task forces, and working groups.  

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is received from an Associate Director of the Newnan LSA Academic Advising Center.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional and administrative supervision may be exercised if duties include working with student peers or support staff.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year university
  • Knowledge of the pre-health professions and the ability to advise pre-medical and other pre-health students within a liberal arts college; 
  • Knowledge of purposes and objectives of a liberal arts education; 
  • Collaborative work style and team-building skills; ability to work with diverse constituencies; ability to lead groups; ability to act independently, take initiative and promote innovation; 
  • Ability to deliver timely, accurate and precise information in a multi-task environment; excellent judgment and respect for confidentiality; 
  • Familiarity with technology and its application in an advising setting.

Because this is a hybrid position, you are expected to live within a reasonable commuting distance to Ann Arbor. You are required to have a high-speed internet connection and a designated working space in your home. Equipment, including a laptop, will be provided for your use.
