The University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is hiring a Creative Designer Intermediate to join a diverse team of professionals dedicated to providing delightful and inclusive technology experiences for our faculty, students, and staff. You'll be surrounded by talented and dedicated people and will report to the Research Computing Services Supervisor. You will work closely with our Digital Scholarship team, our Research Software Programming Team, as well as our UX/UI and Accessibility Lead.

ABOUT THE JOB

You will join us in a new 1.5-year term-limited, full-time position to help our team of designers, developers, librarians, and research consultants by producing creative digital assets for websites, apps, and exhibits for our faculty and researchers. Your primary activities will involve a high degree of creativity with broad leeway to develop original work. You will be responsible for graphic design, typesetting, design output, creative imagery, art, color themes, and web pages; involved in the development and maintenance of the graphics standards, techniques, and methods; and will counsel internal clients on identity and design standards and policies.

You will work with our Digital Scholarship Studio and its related services, on projects that address some of the moment's pressing societal challenges. Many of the projects we work on have global visibility as our faculty and researchers share their work within their disciplines and with the public.

ABOUT YOU

You might be a great fit for this position if you are comfortable working in collaborative multidisciplinary teams that include folks like researchers, students, other programmers, web designers, user experience designers, librarians, systems administrators, and more. You might have an art degree. You might not. That's not what we're looking for. We care about what you can do and how you do it, not about how you got here. A track record of conscientious, thoughtful work speaks volumes.

• Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or equivalent combination of education, certification, and/or experience
• Proven ability to develop and execute a wide range of design projects, including print, digital, web, audio, video, and/or photography
• Proficiency with graphics software, web-based graphics and design tools, and other creative software
• Experience with visual design processes like defining color palettes, selecting fonts, and creating digital visual assets
• We work with WordPress, Omeka, and Adobe Creative Suite. You would come to us with experience with some sort of web platform like these or others
• Strong interpersonal skills. Position requires working closely with faculty, staff, and interdisciplinary teams
• Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines and coordinate projects
• Proven commitment to accessibility design standards
• Knowledge/Familiarity of standard web markup languages and best practices (HTML/XML/CSS)

• Experience working with Figma or other design collaboration software
• Experience working with 3D modeling software
• Experience working with video game engines
• Experience working with the Omeka and/or WordPress platforms
• Experience working with faculty and researchers at an institution of higher education
• Interest in and aptitude for learning and applying new technologies
• Experience working with any non-digital or non-computer aided visual creative methods and tools
