The staff of the Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital Postpartum-Newborn unit are committed to the care of postpartum mothers and newborns in an environment that supports and empowers families. Common diagnoses include vaginal or assisted birth, cesarean birth, post-operative and re-admission patients, multiple birth, newborn complications (e.g. hypoglycemia, transient tachypnea of the newborn, jaundice, sepsis, poor feeding), procedures (e.g. circumcision), health screening, pain and comfort management, identification of, and intervention with, postpartum and newborn complications in the mother-baby setting.
Postpartum-Newborn nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. Postpartum-Newborn nurses work in collaboration with, and provide direction and delegation with, clerical staff, patient care technicians, and students. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Postpartum-Newborn nurses include (but are not limited to) the VVWH Nursing Standards of Care and AWHONN Standards; upholding the Mission, Vision, and Values of Michigan Medicine and all policies, guidelines, procedures and processes; and participating in professional leadership opportunities on the unit (i.e. participation in unit committees, charge nurse, new employee orientation precepting, teaching classes and inservices, etc.).
