Job Summary

 

The Resident Advisor position is essential to the success of the students in the residence hall. The staff in Housing and Residential Life will be committed to an educational approach in order to provide for the most meaningful experience for our residents. Key responsibilities of the position include implementation of Housing and Residential Life's mission and learning outcomes.

Housing and Residential Life learning outcomes include:

Community Engagement: creating opportunities to help develop the whole student in a manner that builds responsible living and contributes to student learning. RAs will implement this learning outcome by:

  • Developing relationships with their residents. RAs are expected to have regular one-on-one interactions in order to get to know each resident individually. RAs will also help to connect residents to one another.
  • Building community in the residence hall by participating and encouraging casual social interaction, planning and implementing social and educational programming, and demonstrating consistent availability and accessibility to residents.
  • Becoming well acquainted with and knowledgeable about residents, academic, and social progress. RAs will alert HRL about residents who appear to need additional support, and make contact with students at the direction of HRL and/or other university officials.
  • Leading floor and community meetings as needed to address community issues and relay important information. RAs also assist residents in proactively addressing individual and community conflict.
  • Supporting their residents' leadership development through the encouragement of involvement in Hall Council.
  • Designing passive educational strategies such as bulletin boards and door decorations to better enhance the community.
  • Support the dining service and staff by eating with residents, and providing consistent and constructive feedback to assist in continuing to develop a positive dining experience.

Student Development: crafting community through responsible communication, decision making, and behavior that considers both individual and collective needs. RAs will implement this learning outcome by:

  • Encouraging students to act with reason, to assume responsibility for their actions, and to be consistently considerate of the rights and freedoms of others.
  • Being attentive to and reporting all health and safety concerns in the residence hall. 
  • Interpreting and explaining the Code of Student Conduct (CSC) and Community Living Standards (CSL) to students and hold students accountable in a fair and objective manner.
  • Documenting all violations of the CSC and CLS in a fair and objective manner, and participate as required in the student conduct process.
  • Modeling personal behavior that is consistent with the Resident's Guide to Community Living at UM-Flint, the Code of Student Conduct, and City, State and Federal Laws.
  • Respond both on- and off-duty to students in crisis (physical, emotional, medical, etc.) following established protocols. 
  • Avoid situations that may compromise the credibility, integrity and/or reputation of the RA position, HRL Department and/or the University.

Academic Integration: academic partnerships and collaborations that enhance the residential community and allow students to achieve their academic potential. RAs will implement this learning outcome by:

  • Building partnerships with faculty and staff supporting our residential learning and theme communities.
  • Implementing educational strategies for residents in these learning and theme communities.
  • Referring students to a variety of academic resources on campus.
  • Promoting the use of academic spaces within the residence hall such as study rooms, lounges, and computer labs.
  • Enforcing quiet and courtesy hours to foster a conducive environment for residents to study and sleep.

Growth Mindset: creating a safe space where students learn about themselves and how they connect to the larger community by demonstrating citizenship and personal responsibility. RA's will implement this learning outcome by:

  • Challenge residents to understand and appreciate their responsibility to others both on and off-campus
  • Role-modeling responsible, healthy, and mature behavior and habits
  • Supporting the custodial and maintenance staff by promoting ownership of building facilities
  • Create and foster a community in which all individuals are respected in part by encouraging students to explore and learn about cultures and identities different from their own

Additional Expectations: This position is for the 2025-2026 academic year only. 

  • Ability to work a minimum of 20 hours/week. Compensation is room and board (please consult with the Office of Financial Aid to determine how this may impact your award package).
  • Those hired should be available during the Winter 2025 semester on Friday's between 10am-12pm for the Resident Advisor onboarding class.
  • Those hired should be available for REQUIRED Fall 2025 training, move-in, and welcome activities starting August 11, 2025 through August 27, 2025. Resident Advisors should also be available for Winter 2026 training dates which will be shared at the start of fall training.
  • RAs must be available for regular staff meeting, training, and in-services during the academic year.
  • RAs must be available to work irregular hours, university holidays, university breaks, university, weather-related closures, special events, and residence hall opening and closing. RAs must be available to work on-campus before and after the regular academic year cycle.
  • Work commitments beyond the RA position and regular class commitments may not exceed 15 hours per week. Any outside commitments must be approved by the supervisor.
  • This is a live-in position. RAs will maintain the establishment of primary residence in the assigned room and suite. Room assignments may change depending on the needs of HRL.
  • This position serves on duty and will respond to crises, with support from HRL staff and campus partners.
  • Candidates must be available for employment for fall 2025 and winter 2026 semesters.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Enrolled as a UM-Flint student at the time of application and for the duration of the RA appointment.
    • Undergraduate candidates:
      • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits for the fall 2025 and winter 2026 terms during employment
      • Must have completed 24 credits by May 1, 2025
    • Graduate candidates:
      • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 credits for the fall 2025 and winter 2026 terms during employment
      • Must have completed 18 credits by May 1, 2025
  • Candidates must have a University of Michigan-Flint cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher prior to the start of employment. A cumulative and term grade point average of 2.5 must be maintained during the period of employment starting the semester the position is accepted. Grades will be checked each semester prior to employment and during employment.
  • Candidates must be in good academic, conduct, and financial standing with Housing and Residence Life, Office of Student Conduct, and UM-Flint.

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
