Job Summary

 

Under the supervision of the Director of the Museum (and Senior Manager of LSA Units), the Chief Administrator (CA) provides leadership and day-to-day management of the administrative and business side of the museum aligned with the museum?s mission and strategic plan initiatives. The individual in this position manages a staff of administrative professionals working collaboratively with curators, archaeologists, and research scientists employed at the Kelsey Museum. This position will supervise the administrative professional staff within the unit as well as coordinate facility operations with DPSS security, LSA Facilities, and custodial staff.


Working closely with the Director and Associate Director, this position will support the planning and priority setting for museum operations as well as strategic budget decisions.  This position will oversee and work closely with the business office and LSA business analyst to oversee the budget and to ensure that the Museum is following College and University best practices related to financial and HR management.
 

The Chief Administrator role acts as the Museum?s representative over a wide range of University and community constituents.  The individual will work closely with the Director and Associate Director to expand foundation and government support for the Museum and will work collaboratively with LSA Development on any public-facing activities.

The Kelsey Museum is located on the central campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and houses a collection of more than 100,000 objects from the ancient Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East. In addition to its permanent galleries and special exhibitions, the museum sponsors research, archaeological fieldwork, and a wide range of academic and public programming. It serves as the home of a graduate program, the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology, and is closely affiliated with the university?s Museum Studies Program. The education department is vital to Kelsey?s mission and vision, serving a growing audience of approximately 1500 K-12 tours and 2500 university classes annually.

Responsibilities*

 

Oversight of daily museum administrative operations through supervision of staff including the Executive Secretary and Graduate Program Coordinator. Coordination of special events and rentals, merchandising, gift shop, and international field project budgets. Management of unit activities related to security, facility, and custodial, as well as oversight of building activities including LSA upgrade and building endowment projects.  


Strategic partnership with the Director and Associate Director on major planning, priority setting, overall management, and museum operations. Support unit grant activities with MLB support and monitoring.  Partner on development activities in conjunction with LSA Development, Marketing, & Communications partners and the Museum Director and Associate Director. 
 

Required Qualifications*

 

Bachelor's degree or equivalent required. Three or more years of administrative work in an academic environment; strong financial management skills in budgeting and expense reporting; strong experience developing highly interactive and collaborative team environments; demonstrated ability in managing staff, leadership through change, and working within a complex and collaborative administrative structure; excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and leadership skills; strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to manage various aspects of a complex organization. Five to seven years experience supervising, mentoring and professionally developing a variety of staff.  Experience with management of externally funded sponsored research, and experience with undergraduate and graduate student programs. Experience in a research environment in conjunction with grant/contract proposal preparation. Ability to work proactively in a fast-paced, dynamic unit and the ability to work independently and interactively as part of a team. Excellent communication skills: excellent interpersonal skills are necessary. Strong organizational skills and competency and experience using technical and administrative tools to effectively manage a unit?s business practices
