Department Summary:

University Health and Counseling (UHC) provides comprehensive, public-health informed preventative and clinical services (counseling individual, group, relationships; 14 different medical services and specialties, nursing, pharmacy, diagnostic services), mental health promotion, education, training, outreach, and postvention to the U-M campus community (students, faculty, staff, retirees and guests). An actively merging unit of two accredited departments University Health Service (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care/AAAHC) and Counseling & Psychological Services (International Association of Counseling Services/IACS) with >220 staff and trainees, UHC provides coordinated, integrated care within the same electronic health record (Epic/MiChart) as Michigan Medicine (MM), where many community members also receive emergency, inpatient, and outpatient care (e.g., MM emergency departments, inpatient services, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization programs, and specialist ambulatory care). UHC operates in two primary locations (Michigan Union, 530 S. State St.; University Health Service, 207 Fletcher St.) as well as in embedded counselor offices in 18 schools/colleges across central and north campus. UHC is a unit of U-M Student Life (SL) and reports to the SL Associate Vice President for Health & Wellbeing and up to the Vice President of Student Life, who is a U-M Executive Officer (EO).

Position Summary:

The Acute and Complex Care Specialist will join a new team at UHC that will ensure timely, accessible care across the U-M continuum of mental health care. Providing both direct service and acting as a clinical liaison between UHC, Michigan Medicine, and outside mental health providers, the team bridges gaps in the mental health system of care through ongoing needs assessment, counseling and therapy, complex care management, outreach, consultation, warm handoffs, and connection to non-clinical resources in order to ensure wrap-around continuous care. This unique role will have flexibility to be located both at CAPS and UHS.

Clinical - 65%

• Provide care for students seeking same-day or next-day urgent, crisis, and complex care services. This includes weekly primary duty shifts or acting as backup when primary team members are absent
• Responsibilities include:  
  • Conduct clinical diagnostic interviews to evaluate/assess and respond to client needs.
  • Assess risk and follow established protocols.
  • Provide immediate clinical and support interventions.  
  • Coordinate and assist staff with real-time support for clients in crisis and/or with complex clinical needs.
• Engage in direct clinical services with a caseload of clients. Responsibilities include:
  • Provide therapy, stabilization services, and continuity of care for clients with acute or complex needs or who are at risk.  
  • Provide bridging appointments, initial consultation, and treatment groups that include but are not limited to presenting concerns of anxiety, emotional regulation, depression, and crisis stabilization.  
• Provide clinical case management including  
  • Use agreed upon standards and protocols to evaluate client needs and to develop case management plans for clients referred by UHC staff.  
  • Connect client and supporting staff with appropriate campus and community resources to address client mental health and situational concerns and/or to assist in the problems of daily living.
  • Support client post-hospitalization needs as part of / in coordination with Clinical Care Management Team (CCMT).
  • Provide students with stepped care (step up and step down)
  • Respond to indirect requests for assistance via MiChart in-basket messages
  • Help students navigate difficult insurance concerns in collaboration with UHC Campus Insurance office
  • Monitor messages sent after-hours via MiChart, UHC after-hours services (Fonemed, Uhelp)  
  • Cross-cover for clinical colleagues (as needed) in order to ensure continuity of access and operations
  • Provide supervision for trainees (credential dependent). 

Administrative - 25%

• Participate in all required UHC functions (meetings, summits, retreats, continuing education events).
• Connect with other UHC, Student Life, and University staff and offices to maintain knowledge of resources for students.
• Engage with, build, and maintain relationships with community providers and resources.
• Maintaining documentation of clinical work in a complete and timely manner.
• Provide clinical workshops and liaison services. 

Other Duties as Assigned - 10%

• This is credential dependent and may include other indirect and direct clinical responsibilities and tasks, as well as involvement in work teams and committees.

• Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, or a closely related field, from an APA-accredited program, and APA-accredited internship
• Licensed or license eligible in the State of Michigan. Full license must be obtained within 2 years. If the full license is not acquired within two years, employment may be terminated
• At least one year of experience providing triage, crisis intervention and care coordination to diverse populations

Working Conditions:

• Hybrid: In office 4 days a week and option to work remote 1 day a week. 1st shift: Monday - Friday.

Physical Requirements:

• The incumbent is required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.

Limited License  $68,450 - $75,300

Full License $75,300 - $82,200

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of selected candidates

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.    

Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2025 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY25-26 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.
