The Student Research Assistant will support a faculty-led research project examining how algorithmic bias affects social equity in areas such as healthcare, hiring, and surveillance. This role involves conducting a literature review, performing data analysis on survey results, and drafting sections of a research paper for publication or presentation. The assistant will work closely with the Principal Investigator, who will handle survey distribution and data cleaning, while the student focuses on synthesizing academic research, writing, and analyzing data.

• Conduct a literature review on algorithmic bias and its impact on marginalized communities.
• Create an annotated bibliography and develop a structured research paper outline.
• Draft key sections of the research paper, including Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.
• Analyze quantitative and qualitative survey data using appropriate tools.
• Prepare visual data representations (e.g., charts, tables) and assist with formatting the final manuscript.
• Provide weekly progress updates and attend check-ins with the Principal Investigator.

• Currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Michigan-Flint.
• Familiarity with academic research methods and literature reviews.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Experience with Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or statistical tools (e.g., SPSS, R, or Python).
• Proficient in academic writing with attention to structure and clarity.
• Ability to manage time independently and meet deadlines.

• Coursework or prior research experience related to data ethics, social justice, or computer science.
• Familiarity with APA or MLA formatting.
• Experience with qualitative coding or survey-based research.
• Interest in publishing or presenting research in an academic setting.

Hybrid
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
