The D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is a 12-story hospital that will house 264 private rooms capable of converting to intensive care; a state-of-the-art neurosciences center; and high-level, specialty care services for cardiovascular and thoracic patients, along with advanced imaging. The 690,000-square-foot hospital which also features 20 surgical and three interventional radiology suites is being constructed adjacent to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, with plans for bridge and tunnel connections to existing inpatient care facilities. The anticipated opening of the new D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is fall 2025.

Maintain staffing of the Pavilion Patient and Family Library and provide reference service.  This position will assist patients and families with finding resources to answer their health-related questions and educate on the programs and services available at the UMHS Pavilion utilizing the library collection, the University of Michigan Health website and internet.

• Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Pavilion Patient and Family Library, providing exceptional customer service to all patients and families.  
• Maintain staffing and coordinate the volunteer schedule.
• Organize and monitor storage of supplies and materials.
• Order office supplies, brochures, flyers, and other print materials distributed at the Pavilion Patient Family Library.
• Input data into various automated library/patient education databases.
• Prepare statistical reports utilizing Excel spreadsheets.
• Troubleshoot equipment problems including computers, fax, telephone etc.
• Assist with organizing and maintaining inventories and monitoring quality-control, using LEAN principles to include:
  * Prepare and mail education materials by typing, collating, and assembling materials as requested.
• Manage counter, phone, and email enquiries.
• Employ active listening skills to understand and assist patients and families effectively, ensuring their questions and concerns are addressed accurately and promptly.
• Assist library visitors in finding what they need, in print and online.
• Check materials in and out and shelve books according to their categorization.
• Answer consumer health reference questions.
• Under supervision of the patient and family librarian conduct information searches and assemble packets according to established guidelines.
• Refer patients and families to appropriate patient support services within University of Michigan Health.
• Assist customers in using library and business resources: computers, scanners, and photocopiers, and other University of Michigan Health patient services web pages and databases.
• Perform additional duties and projects assigned.

• Associate degree or four or more years of equivalent combination of education and professional experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
• Must possess strong Microsoft Office skills (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Canva, Publisher), with a proven record of effectively learning and utilizing computer systems, performing internet searches, and utilizing other web-based applications.
• Exceptional customer service skills and professional demeanor. 
• Excellent organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks with demonstrated follow through.
• Candidate must be a team player with the ability to work independently, be self-directed and demonstrate problem solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail with strong proof reading and grammar skills.
• Demonstrated ability to thrive in a deadline driven environment.
• Must be able to push and pull objects weighing 60-80 pounds on a cart with wheels.
• Must be able to lift education materials, weighing approximately 10-20 pounds, to a height of 2-4 feet.
• Demonstrated excellent attendance, reliability and punctuality required. 

• Bachelor?s degree preferred.
• Library experience in reference, circulation, technical processing, and automated library management system. 
• Understanding of library-wide practices and procedures. 
• Advanced knowledge of medical terminology.
• Experience with patients/families (health care consumers) in a hospital setting. 
• Knowledge of/experience in inventory control and LEAN principles.

20 hours per week. Monday through Friday, 10:00am-2:00pm.

This position requires the employee to work onsite at Michigan Medicine.
