Job Summary

 

The Michigan Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides outstanding, state-of-the-art, evidence-based care for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. As well, our faculty, staff, and trainees conduct a diverse range of musculoskeletal research and scholarship. The departments research program integral to its mission and vision of leading advances in musculoskeletal health, through excellence and innovative care, scientific discovery, and dedicated teaching.

Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (ORL) is conducted by a diverse group of faculty, staff and trainees with expertise in biology, engineering, epidemiology, health outcomes and healthcare. The collaborative research programs are focused on improving treatment or preventing musculoskeletal disorders and disease. Primary basic science research operations are located at the Biomedical Science Research Building, with additional clinical research sites. ORL website: https://orl.med.umich.edu/

The Lang Laboratory is assembling an interdisciplinary team dedicated to uncovering new insights into musculoskeletal tissue oxygenation and exploring the role of erythrocyte function and development in musculoskeletal health, injury, and disease. Our goal is to regenerate bone, restore cartilage, and advance biomaterials. This position is currently offered as a one-year appointment.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Perform primary cell cultures and differentiation assays under various environmental conditions (e.g., hypoxia chamber)
  • Assist to establish bioreactor and MPS
  • Assist in performing flow cytometry
  • Assist in tissue harvesting and preparing histological samples and perform immunofluorescence staining
  • Analyze microCT and nanoCT data
  • Collect and analyze data, accurately document experiments and findings
  • Actively participate in lab meetings and support other research team members

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related engineering field. Experience working in a biomedical research laboratory
  • 1-3 years experience required 
  • Experience in bone and/or cartilage research
  • Experience with microCT and nanoCT, including the use of Dragonfly software
  • Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Google Docs, Sheets, Slides)
  • Strong team spirit with a willingness to support lab members and work independently
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to adhere to laboratory safety protocols and procedures

Desired Qualifications*

 

Experience in histology and immunofluorescence

Additional Information

 

This position is currently offered as a one-year appointment. This is a term-limited appointment. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits.  This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.

Background Screening
