Responsibilities*

 

To assemble, install and repair piping, fixtures and equipment used in the production and distribution of steam or hot water under low or high pressure, and perform Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) on low and high pressure piping and condensate systems in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section 9, Welding Certification in compliance with B31 Code. Prepare and update code reports as pertaining to welding logs (B31.1 code)

  • Install, inspect, troubleshoot and repair steam and water lines, equipment, radiators, traps, valves, pumps, gauges, controls, sensors, fittings and accessories.
  • Install and maintain boilers, unit heaters, fintube and convectors, heat exchangers, control valves and refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.
  • Plan and lay out piping, piping support, fittings, and fixtures to be fabricated and assembled according to plans and specifications.
  • Review drawings and specifications and prepare material lists for purchase to execute assigned work.
  • Prepare pipe for welding and cut pipe, using hacksaw, pipe cutters, hammer and chisel grinders and various beveling and cutting torches.
  • Thread pipe, using threading machine, and bend pipe and tubing by hand or with pipe-bending machines and tools.
  • Assemble and install pipe and pipe fittings of brass, copper, lead, carbon and stainless steel of various compositions, glass, plastic and other materials.
  • Use rigging in the installation and maintenance of piping and components.
  • Join piping by means of threaded, calked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused, cemented or welded joints in accordance with (SMAW) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) standards.
  • Test piping systems for leaks, using gauges, hydro-static testing equipment, compressed air, and other certification technologies as required by standards and codes.
  • Secure pipes to and on structures with clamps, brackets hangers and other supports according to codes and specifications.
  • Install and maintain boilers, and refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.
  • Cut or bore through walls, ceilings, floors or partitions.
  • Perform (SMAW) and (GTAW) on low and high pressure steam piping, process piping, and other piping, including condensate piping systems in accordance with (ASME) Section 9, Welding Certification in compliance with B31 Code, including B31.1 Power Piping, B31.3 Process Piping, and B31.9 Building Services Piping; and meet and maintain qualification with all State and University requirements for welding competence testing, welding certification and welding currency necessary to perform B31 Code and State Code governed piping work at the University of Michigan.
  • Prepare, update and maintain all required reports and documentation relating to B31and other code and University standards, including all compliance documentation required by the University of Michigan Boiler Act Section 23 Exemption Program.
  • Acquire, store, use and manage all applicable piping, fittings, supplies and materials in accordance with University of Michigan Section 23 Exemption Program requirements and with all
    applicable codes and standards.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications and prepare isometric drawings.
  • Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
  • Possession of (ASME) code, Section 9 Welding Certification in compliance with B31 (SMAW) is necessary.
  • Reasonable responsible work experience in the installation and repair of steam and hot water systems is necessary.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment and materials used in the installation and repair of steam and hot water systems and fixtures is necessary.
  • Considerable skill in the operation of steam fitting tools and machinery is necessary.
  • Ability to operate power tools and perform steam fitting tasks safely is necessary.
  • Reasonable knowledge of state and local heating and boiler codes is necessary.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications and prepare isometric drawings is necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others is necessary.
  • Reasonable physical strength and dexterity is necessary.
  • Reasonable knowledge of the maintenance requirements of steam and water lines, fixtures and controls is necessary.
  • Reasonable knowledge of Microsoft Office computer software and email systems is necessary.
  • Ability to obtain a University of Michigan Boiler Act Section 23 Exemption Program Welder.
  • Certification for (SMAW) and (GTAW) weld processes is necessary.
  • Completion of an accredited minimum four year Apprenticeship Program is desirable.
  • Some knowledge of rigging procedures is desirable.
