BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is responsible for providing clinical expertise and support for the safe and ethical provision of ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) services. The role serves in conjunction with the ECMO Clinical Nurse Educator (ENC) as the primary ECMO Care (EC) liaison for clinical and educational activities within the ECMO department. This includes intensive care units, units that initiate ECMO but do not house ECMO patients (Adult ED, Mott ED, CICU, CVC and Mott Cath lab), and other areas as directed by the ECMO Clinical Nursing Director and ECMO Nursing Supervisor. The ECMO Respiratory Clinical Specialist is selected for specific these responsibilities based upon their expertise and knowledge in ECMO therapy. This position does not involve direct operational or supervisory responsibilities.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential
- Position is a combination clinical and educational role. 0.6 FTE will be dedicated to provided clinical ECMO care. 0.3 FTE will be dedicated to meeting ECMO education needs and demands. Surges in ECMO activity may necessitate 100% clinical role during the duration of a surge in ECMO volumes.
- Attends and participates in ECMO conferences.
- Meets with the nurse supervisor and the ECMO Clinical Nursing Director regularly.
- Understands and applies continuous quality improvement practices and lean operating principles. Oversees the quality of care and safety of patients related to ECMO services provided by the department at the unit level and addresses opportunities for improvement with unit management.
- In collaboration with the ENC, participates in providing annual competencies for the ECMO staff.
- Assists the ECMO simulation team with bi-annual high fidelity ECMO sims.
- Instructs personnel on all new ECMO devices and administrative policies in collaboration with the ENC.
- Works with the ENC to organize and provide the orientation of new employees within the ECMO department.
- Acts as a resource and advisor to the ECMO Clinical Nursing Director and ECMO Nursing Supervisor.
- Assists in the development and evaluation of new and existing ECMO clinical projects as assigned by the ECMO Clinical Nursing Director.
- Along with ECMO ENC, responsible for evaluating, updating, developing, and implementing new ECMO policies, procedures, orientation and onboarding process.
- Acts as department liaison on committees to promote institutional priorities such as ECMO-related safety protocols, Unit Quality Committees, etc.
- Acts as a subject matter expert for all ECMO services offered by the department.
- Participates in and coordinates multidisciplinary SIMs physicians, bedside nurses, and other ECMO stakeholders.
- In collaboration with the ENC, coordinates the educational needs of bedside nurses across five clinical units.
- Participates in nursing and emergency simulations for new ECMO bedside nurses.
- Supports and participates in ECMO-related research projects.
- Attends scheduled management, care unit-specific, and general staff meetings.
- Adheres to all Department and Hospital policies.
- Completes continuing education units or professional development credits annually, including department and Michigan Medicine/UMHS mandatory competencies related to ECMO within required timeframes or as specified by the department's continuing education program.

- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Coordinates annual bedside nurse checkoffs across five clinical units.
