The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery seeks a project manager to provide organization, resources, and structure to the performance of an interdisciplinary Disability and Research Safety Infrastructure (DRSI) project funded by the University of Michigans Provost Office. Collaborating departments include Environmental Health and Safety and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The project manager will coordinate activities across all three units with the aim of developing a proactive disability accommodation infrastructure. The project will proceed through three phases: Community engagement and data organization, Implementation, and Sustainability and Scholarship. The project manager is responsible for planning, facilitating, managing, and monitoring all three phases. Project deliverables include revised disability accommodation policies and procedures, a comprehensive plan for safe and equitable research spaces for disabled individuals, and educational resources for faculty, staff, and learners. This role also involves collaboration with medical school facilities in support of the Space and Research Programming Team. The project manager will report to Professor Karl Jepsen, Associate Dean for Research, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical School, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering and Medical School. Candidates must demonstrate experience in project management, analytical thinking, and confidence in recommending courses of action. This is a 2.5-year term-limited position.

• Coordinate meetings and establish agendas for the Disability and Research Safety Infrastructure Team, the community, and the Space and Research Programming Team.
• Set timelines and deliverables for each of the three phases to support the development and implementation of a disability accommodation infrastructure program.
• Monitor project progress against goals and track spending against the budget of the Disability and Research Safety Infrastructure grant.
• Engage with unit leadership, faculty, staff, and learners to identify opportunities for enhancing research health and safety, wellness, accessibility, resource allocation, and operational efficiency. 
• Interview stakeholders to conduct needs assessments and deliver a gap analysis of safety policies and guidelines to the project team.
• Administer community surveys to understand how individuals engage with the university's physical infrastructure and organize the data to develop resource allocation solutions and address disability accommodation needs for analysis and decision-making by project sponsors.
• Author reports and presentations for delivery to Orthopaedic Surgery, EHS leadership, faculty, administrative units, research departments, and business and administrative conferences (e.g. Association of Academic Medical Colleges)
• Interpret and apply current space, accessibility, and safety policies and procedures, and offer operational recommendations to ensure compliance.
• Lead the creation of new policies and procedures, as needed, for a sustainable disability accommodation infrastructure program.
• Collaborate with facilities and architectural teams to apply and expand upon ADA guidelines in research areas.
• Collaborate with medical school facilities to strategically plan space allocation and facility-related operations. 
• Coordinate the annual space review process and document outcomes
  

• Bachelors degree 
• Minimum of 2 years experience in project or program management.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with customers at all levels.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
• Proven ability to solve problems and thrive in uncertain environments or novel situations
• Strong relationship-building skills, including the demonstrated ability to build consensus among a decentralized stakeholder base. Strong team orientation and ability to manage in complex organizations. Politically savvy and comfortable working at all levels of the organization. 
• Scientific background and/or research operations experience, especially in an academic medical center setting. 
• Ability to develop and organize technical documentation, papers, and project plans.
• Knowledge of essential concepts, practices, and administrative operations of the University of Michigan main campus and medical school.
• Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of tools

• Advanced degree in basic science research, public health, or another related field.
• Experience leading cross-functional teams, working with diverse stakeholders, and managing multi-phase projects.
• Demonstrated experience in a university setting, collaborating with faculty, staff, and/or students in research space management and knowledge of best practices in research space utilization.
• Experience in developing and analyzing planning documents, surveys, data visualizations, etc.

This is a 2.5-year term-limited position. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits.
