The Center for Sustainable Systems (https://css.umich.edu/) is a research center within the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan. CSS creates systems analysis methods, models, and metrics to accelerate high impact sustainability transformations.
Following our work for the President?s Commission on Carbon Neutrality (2019-21, available at https://www.fulcrum.org/um-pccn), we are currently collaborating with the University?s Office of Campus Sustainability on a high-impact project to develop goals for the University?s Scope 3 emissions related to capital goods (building construction), food, business travel, and purchased goods and services. This project involves high-level analysis of data provided by OCS, with supporting literature review, case study examples, and Excel-based modeling where appropriate. Deliverables include suggested goals in each Scope 3 category studied, reduction scenarios for each goal, and a description of the process and data used for each goal so that OCS can institutionalize future measurement and progress tracking. The successful candidate will also facilitate stakeholder engagement meetings to present work to an internal audience and adjust deliverables based on these discussions.
This temporary position, based in CSS, is full-time (40 hrs/wk) for 12 weeks, starting immediately (as soon as possible) and ending after 12 weeks or by July 31, 2025.
Center faculty and staff will provide support and guidance as needed throughout the project, and extension of work on additional research projects may be possible for the right candidate.
A local candidate who can work in-person or hybrid is preferred, but remote work will be considered.
