The Academic Coach for Adult Learners will provide comprehensive, student-centered support to adult learners (ages 25 and older) pursuing their first bachelor's degree. This role involves personalized, individualized assistance focusing on academic challenges, financial planning, and facilitating connections with university services. The coach will operate within a proactive case management system to ensure each student receives the necessary support to persist and complete their degree at UM-Dearborn.

This is a one year, full-time position that is grant funded with benefits and the potential for extension.  This position may have opportunities for some hybrid work as well.

Academic Support:

• Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions to help students identify academic goals, strengths, and areas needing improvement.
• Provide strategies for time management, study skills, and test preparation.
• Assist students in understanding course material and connecting with tutors or professors as needed.
• Monitor academic progress and intervene when students are at risk of falling behind.

Financial Planning:

• Guide students through the financial aid process, including FAFSA applications, scholarships, and grant opportunities.
• Assist with budgeting, financial literacy, and managing education-related expenses.
• Connect students with financial aid advisors, internal, and external resources for additional support.

Connection to University Services:

• Serve as a liaison between the student and university resources, such as career services, counseling, disability services, tutoring, mentoring, and student organizations.
• Provide information on campus events, workshops, and programs that may benefit the student's academic and personal development.
• Advocate for students and ensure they are aware of and can access all available resources.

Proactive Case Management:

• Develop personalized education plans in collaboration with each student, including setting short- and long-term goals.
• Maintain detailed records of student interactions, progress, and any interventions.
• Conduct regular follow-ups and check-ins to address any emerging issues and adjust plans as necessary.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Stay informed of best practices and emerging trends in adult education, academic coaching, and student support services.
• Participate in ongoing professional development and training sessions.
• Contribute to program assessments and improvements based on student feedback and outcomes.
• Assist with adult learner community building events. This may necessitate working occasional evenings during the academic year. 

• Bachelor's degree required. 
• At least 1-2 years of  related experience.
• Experience working with adult learners or non-traditional students in an educational setting.
• Strong understanding of academic support strategies, financial aid processes, and university services.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with students.
• Proficient in case management, with strong organizational and record-keeping skills and familiarity with UM systems preferred. 
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive and positive approach.
• Comfort with technology and learning new operating systems.

• Preferred degrees in education, student affairs, counseling, social work, or relevant work experience.
• A master's degree is preferred.
