This position reports to the Director of Infection Prevention & Epidemiology and works closely with the Infection Prevention Senior Project Manager, and the Lead Infection Prevention Environmental Health Specialist, and the Senior Infection Prevention Environmental Health Specialist.

25% Participate in the water management program (enterprise wide, including both the inpatient setting and ambulatory care centers on various municipal water sources with varying degrees of risk.) and carry out critical work related to the Water Management Plan recommendations

• Perform Water Sampling at intervals determine by Water Management Plan
  • Including but not limited to: Legionella Cultures, Chlorine Testing, Temperature Testing
  • Review system monitoring data, identify gaps, make recommendations on monitoring areas without current system monitoring

    • Ice machines, filters, aerators, sink design, PCUs, backflow preventers

25% Participate in the Air Quality Program and carry out critical work related to the Air Quality Plan recommendations Including but not limited to: 

• Air pressure testing (micromanometer), air flow testing (anemometer), smoke testing, particle counts
• Interpreting airflow, pressure, particle counts or other related data

10% Make recommendation for remediation of issues identified

10% Assist with investigations related to potentially waterborne and airborne illnesses

5% Provide Regular Updates to institutional Committees (Infection Control Committee, Environment of Care Committee)

5% Provide input and expertise to the Annual Water and Air Management Plans/Risk Assessments

5% Ensure compliance with design guidelines with regard to best practices related to water and air systems

5% Assist with Risk Assessments of vulnerable areas with regards to potential exposure from water and HVAC systems

5% Make recommendations as needed in response to potential exposures/outbreaks related to water and HVAC Systems

5% Other duties as assigned

Senior

• Bachelor's degree in environmental health, industrial hygiene or other appropriate scientific or engineering field or equivalent and 3 to 5 years related experience. 
• Has oversight for and manages a comprehensive program for compliance related to water or air programs.
• Conducts inspections of water and air systems in healthcare facilities to ensure compliance.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills and strong analytical capabilities.
• Must be able to travel to Michigan Medicine sites, perform water & air testing, collect and send out samples and perform assessments and visual inspections of various water and air systems such as chillers and air handlers.

Intermediate:

• Bachelor's degree in environmental health, industrial hygiene or other appropriate scientific or engineering field or equivalent and 2 to 3 years related experience.
• Knows fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of environmental health/industrial hygiene
• Must be able to travel to Michigan Medicine sites, perform water & air testing, collect and send out samples and perform assessments and visual inspections of various water and air systems such as chillers and air handlers.

• Masters Degree in Environmental Health Science or Industrial Hygiene.
• Three to five years of experience in Environmental Health/Industrial Hygiene in healthcare.
• Some expertise or training in water & air quality and water & air health and safety is and expertise with plumbing and HVAC systems.
• Demonstrated ability to influence change, manage projects, work independently and with groups, efficiently able to meet deadlines, capable of performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and highly self-motivated.
