Job Summary

 

The Consultation and Discovery Librarian reports to the Director of Consultation and Discovery in the Learning and Teaching division. Learning and Teaching advances next century literacies, guides learning, and inspires curiosity through its programs and partnerships. You will be part of the Consultation and Discovery department, which provides general consultation services, promotes reference expertise among the cross-divisional Ask a Librarian services team, fosters connection to other library units and divisions to support library users' research needs, and manages the consultation platform that provides library user access to expertise from across the Library.

Ask a Librarian services at the University of Michigan Library in Ann Arbor are one entry to the Library's network of resources and expertise across its physical and virtual presence. The Ask a Librarian team embraces a learner-centered approach to service and instruction across these service points, with an emphasis on inclusive pedagogy. These services are supportive of multiple modes of inquiry, scholarly content discovery, and applied learning and are available to users at each stage of the research lifecycle. We provide research assistance services to empower researchers, scholars, and learners to be successful in their academic careers and beyond.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Reference and Consultation (50%)
    • Participate in the Ask a Librarian services as a direct service provider and as a mentor who can provide an elevated level of expertise for questions triaged by student assistants and Ask a Librarian staff from other units. 
    • Contribute to the communication and knowledge infrastructures that support reference services.
    • Be a member of the Executive Research Service by providing prompt confidential service to university leadership.
    • Be a member of the Reference Scheduling Team to schedule librarians and staff across Ask a Librarian services and maintain the schedule throughout each semester.
    • Assist the administrator of the Ask a Librarian email service. Work with the email administrator to provide oversight of the service, train staff providing the service, conduct assessment, and maintain relevant infrastructure. 

 

  • Instruction and Projects (40%)
    • Help deliver reference and information service training to students and Ask a Librarian service staff throughout the year. This will include developing training materials and maintaining appropriate content with several tools.
    • Collaborate with the student supervisor to deliver staff training.
    • Serve on the Citation Management Service Team and provide expertise on citation management services through the creation and maintenance of online resources, participating in consultation and instruction, and serving as a point person for email queries.
    • Promote the Library's learning environment by preparing instruction in one-on-one, small group, large class environments; author online instructional materials.
    • Participate in unit, division and Library projects.

 

  • Service and Professional Development (10%)
    • Participate in appropriate unit, department and library-wide meetings; instructional forums, presentations, sessions or workshops; and library teams or committees. 
    • Participate in ongoing learning and professional development relevant to position responsibilities and areas of interest.
       

Required Qualifications*

 
  • ALA accredited Masters Degree in Library or Information Science and prior work experience in a research library or equivalent setting; or a relevant Masters Degree and 3+ years experience in a research library or equivalent research setting.
  • 3+ years of experience providing direct reference services with a demonstrated commitment to outstanding public service and responding to the input and needs of both staff and library users. 
  • 1+ years experience teaching or staff training with a demonstrated knowledge of pedagogical methodologies to deliver training and instruction for diverse groups of users (diverse backgrounds, learning styles, academic disciplines, ages, experience levels).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and new reference, instruction, and learning technologies.
  • Understanding of diversity and the importance of inclusion expressed through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.

The anticipated hire date is Spring 2025.


Appointment is anticipated as an Assistant Librarian, Associate Librarian, or Sr. Associate Librarian. Salary and rank are dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The target salary range for this position is $61,000 to $66,000 for the Assistant Librarian Rank, $66,000 - $76,000 for the Associate Librarian rank, and $76,000 - $89,500 for the Sr. Associate Librarian rank. This appointment is subject to the UM/LEO-GLAM collective bargaining agreement.
