Job Summary

 

The University of Michigan Library in Ann Arbor is one of the world's largest academic research libraries and serves a vibrant university community that is home to 19 schools and colleges, 100 top ten graduate programs, and annual research expenditures exceeding $1.5 billion a year. The Physical Collections and Access team provides access to the library's physical collections. We make sure the library's book stacks remain accessible and usable for library visitors by overseeing how and where we shelve physical items, ensuring online records are accurate, and coordinating item requests.

As an Information Resources Assistant, you will support the processing and stacks maintenance of the Hatcher Graduate collection with a focus on the Asia Library collection. Your primary duties will focus on projects related to the physical collections and their associated online records in the integrated library system (Alma). You will report to the Physical Collections and Access Supervisor for the Hatcher Graduate Library.

What You'll Do

 
  • Update holding and item level records in Alma.
  • Complete inventory-related and stacks-related tasks and projects.
  • Help manage the department?s student employees.
  • Sort and route new materials for placement in appropriate locations.
  • Shelve new and returned materials.
  • Retrieve and process items for user requests.
  • Provide general information to Library users.
  • Participate in departmental meetings.
  • Participate in professional developmental opportunities.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • High School Graduate or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and anti-racism and working to promote a workplace culture that strives to eliminate or reduce the effects of systemic racism and bias.
  • 1+ years of experience learning new technology and computer software, including email and calendaring systems.
  • 1+ years of experience in customer service work.
  • 1+ years of experience training others.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Proficiency in reading Chinese, Japanese, or Korean

Work Schedule

 

The weekly schedule is expected to be Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  Work schedules may be modified based on operational needs. Schedule may vary during semester breaks and weeks that contain University holidays.

Additional Information

 

The person in this position routinely moves through the building to access materials.  They would need to regularly ascend/descend ladders to retrieve materials.  They must be able to navigate the facility using the stairs during an emergency. They must have the ability to move and/or transport materials that weigh up to 25 pounds.
