The Department of Biomedical Engineering is a collaborative unit between the College of Engineering and Medical School and prides itself on fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere for all students, faculty and staff. BME is currently seeking an Undergraduate Academic and Pre-Health Advisor to join their dedicated Student Services Team. This new position will play a crucial role in delivering exceptional customer service to both prospective and current undergraduate Biomedical Engineering students. In addition, this position will provide pre-health advising for all College of Engineering students interested in advancing to medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary medicine, and other health-related fields.

The Undergraduate Academic and Pre-Health Advisor is responsible for delivering comprehensive advising and support services to both prospective and declared BME undergraduate students. This includes academic advising and career counseling for College of Engineering students interested in pursuing health-related professional programs. The advisor will also manage and execute various student services events, maintain accurate advising records, and facilitate effective communication with students and staff.

Advise and Support Students

• Provide accurate advising and counsel regarding academic and career options through 1:1 appointments, drop-in advising, and student services events. Maintain accurate records for meetings with students including note taking, and communicating sensitive information to the appropriate staff
• Provide academic advising for prospective and declared BME undergraduate students, including Cellular and Molecular Biomedical Science (CMBS) students
• Provide pre-health advising for all College of Engineering students interested in advancing to medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary medicine, and other health-related fields (30% effort)
• Provide timely and professional customer service responses to inquiries through the team's shared Student Services BME Advising inbox
• Provide accurate communication for academic milestones (such as registration, graduation, etc.) through various communication channels including the student newsletter, Canvas Page, and AI tools
• Facilitate 1:1 orientation meetings for both UM cross campus and external transfer students. 
• Facilitate declaration events for new BME students
• Oversee the prospective undergraduate student campus visit experience by arranging advising appointments and department/campus tours
• Plan and execute programs and events geared toward student enrichment and community building
• Triage matters to the Student Services Manager, Undergraduate Chair or UM campus resources as appropriate
• Participate in professional association(s) to stay current on advising education and trends  

Support BME Student Services

• Support 1-5 Peer Advisors (current BME undergraduate students) who also provide 1:1 advising appointments to prospective and current students
• Support Recruitment, Graduation, Open House, Welcome Week, and other departmental events that contribute to student enrichment
• Assist with outreach events specifically geared toward prospective students
• Support BME specific career events
• Serve as a back-up support to other student services staff, including, the Master's and PhD advisors, Career Planning and Alumni Engagement Coordinator, the Student Services Manager, as well as the BME Student Services Assistant. 
• Provide feedback and support for continuous process improvements

Manage Administrative Tasks

• Participate in the Pre-Health Advisors Forum, the Departmental Advisors Forum, and the Undergraduate Program Advisors Group in Engineering (UPAGE)
• Support the Undergraduate Education Committee (UEC)
• Provide responses to survey and data requests
• Support the Undergraduate Design Program (attend design presentations, Senior Design expo, etc)-provide feedback for students on their presentations
• Assist the communications team with documentation and course management for the BME website
• Other duties as assigned
   

Academic Advisor Intermediate: Bachelor's Degree with 2+ years of advising or counseling experience in higher education OR a Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.

(Underfill) Academic Advisor Associate: Bachelor's Degree with 1+ years of advising or counseling experience in higher education.

Experience in academic advising or counseling, preferably within higher education or related to health professions.

Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively with a high degree of accuracy while working in an environment of fluctuating priorities and interruptions.

Extremely detail-oriented with the ability to recognize and investigate data anomalies.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) to work effectively with a diverse student body, as well as distinct faculty and staff.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.

Ability to maintain detailed records and manage sensitive information confidentially. Familiar with FERPA.
 

Familiarity and experience with University administrative and business tools such as Business Objects, MReports and other MPathways systems; knowledge of UM organizational structure.
