The Michigan Health Sciences Summer Institute (MHSSI) consists of residential, hybrid, and on-line academies sponsored by the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) Office for Health Equity & Inclusion (OHEI). The Undergraduate Research Academy (URA) will provide undergraduate/recent college graduate students with a research experience alongside a University of Michigan faculty mentor; the Career Development Academy (CDA) will provide undergraduate/recent college graduate students with an MCAT prep course and resources to apply to medical school; and the Summer Pre-College Exposure Academy (SPEA) will provide high school students with an SAT Prep course and college prep resources. Approximately 20 students are accepted in the Career Development Academy, 20 students are accepted in the Undergraduate Research Academy, and 40-50 students are accepted in the Summer Pre-College Exposure Academy.

As part of the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion (OHEI) with the University of Michigan Medical School, the Michigan Health Sciences Summer Institute (MHSSI) is seeking individuals to serve as Pathways Student Leader(s). As a Pathways Student Leader, you will be directly responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of workshops and program events designed to contribute to the professional development of the MHSSI participants. The Pathways Student Leader will oversee the implementation of all workshops, support MHSSI related activities, and be responsible for facilitating designated workshop sessions. The Pathways Student Leader will work closely with and receive direction from the Pathways Pre-Med Program Manager. As a student leader, you will be directly responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of all housing activities and the implementation of co-curricular activities for the programs.

• Support and assist with the creation, facilitation, and logistical implementation of MHSSI workshops and activities with Pathways Pre-Med Program Manager.
• Oversee and facilitate weekly discussion groups and other MHSSI related activities.
• Monitor and create a supply list of the necessary workshop supplies for planned activities.
• Ensure participant completion of all questionnaires/surveys relative to workshops. 
• Assist in creation of a final report of all the feedback for evaluation purposes.
• Meet with Pathways Pre-Med Program Manager on a weekly basis.
• Collaborate with the Pathways team to coordinate residence hall move in/move out day plans. 
• Establish procedures for monitoring and enforcing residence hall rules and regulations.
• Maintain appropriate knowledge, awareness, supervision, and control of participant residential hall dorm room use.
• Maintain residence hall conditions conducive to academic and personal development of all participants.
• Monitor the overall security of the residence hall.
• Handle arrangements for participants with documented special needs.
• Manage residence hall situations involving conflict resolution or inappropriate behavior. 
• Manage the handling of medical emergencies of participants within the residence hall.
• Mentor pre-medical students participating in the Career Development Academy with MCAT related questions as well as questions related to medical school application process 
• Coordinate relevant workshops related to pre-medical student support along journey to career in medicine 

• Must be available: Tuesday, May 27, 2025, to Tuesday, August 5, 2025 (Virtual & In-Person) 
• Highly developed organizational, administrative, and communication (written and oral) skills.
• Experience in planning/facilitating workshops along with developing enrichment & cultural activities.
• Must be detail-oriented, be able to multitask, take initiative, and work in busy learning environments.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Drive applications. 
• Must be available to work evening hours and weekends throughout the programs.
• Must be knowledgeable in handling crisis situations and medical emergency situations within the residence hall.

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
• Resident Advisor/Supervisory experience preferred.
• Possession of a valid driver?s license.
• Prior experience in managing residence hall activities preferred.
• Currently pre-medical student or attend the University of Michigan Medical School and have previous experience with the Michigan Health Sciences Summer Institute

Pathways Student Leader is directly supervised by the Pathways Pre-Med Program Manager

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
