BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
To perform a variety of routine or specialized tests and procedures for use by physicians in diagnosis and treatment of patients in one or more areas of work, such as Clinical Core Laboratory, Transfusion Medicine, Histocompatibility, Flow Cytometry, Molecular Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, Point of Care, Microbiology and other specialty departments.
Regular duties include:
- Perform duties inclusive of an LT (Laboratory Technician).
- Perform high complexity testing without direct supervision.
- Process incoming samples by ensuring correct labeling, computer log-in, centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage.
- Perform and record routine instrument maintenance procedures.
- Analyze and record quality control materials with documentation of action on out-of-range values.
- Accurately analyze patient specimens on instruments and/or by specified manual methodologies within specified turnaround times
- Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols.
- Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols.
- Monitor instrument error codes, troubleshoot and correct problems as necessary
- Accurately transcribe patient data from instrument printouts or worksheets into computer record including any pertinent sample description comments
- Perform analysis on data output from instruments, and create preliminary reports.
- Maintain a safe work area in a well-stocked, clean condition.
- Fulfill departmental continuing education requirement.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform clinical microbiology duties including processing quantitative wound cultures, quantifying and identifying bacterial isolates and performing topical sensitivities.
- Utilize hospital computer systems to order, label, document and report culture results.
- Represent the Trauma Burn Lab/Skin Bank at multidisciplinary patient rounds.
- Perform general laboratory duties including media preparation, sterilization, and maintenance of laboratory equipment, troubleshooting and correcting problems as necessary.
- Participate in routine auditing and CAP surveys.
- Perform various tasks related to burn surgery and tissue banking, including dispensing and documenting use of human allograft skin, banking of autograft skin and maintaining and dispensing of specialized burn treatment tissue and products such as dermal replacement grafts, fibrin glue, amniotic membrane grafts and antimicrobial burn dressings.
- Assist in billing and fee documentation, answer phones, take messages, greet visitors and assist customers.\
- Assist in maintaining the outpatient burn registry.
- Assist in research protocols as needed.
- Adhere to all safety/infection control policies and procedures.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
- Administrative supervision is received from a supervisor or manager
- Functional supervision may be received from a qualified MT specialist, senior technologist, supervisor or manager
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Functional supervision is exercised over laboratory assistants and other assigned staff.
