The Clinical Nursing Director for Inpatient Services of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, will plan and manage the clinical and administrative operations for the Cardiac Procedures Unit (CPU.) 

This role assures implementation of patient care and quality assurance standards; plans, organizes, and evaluates clinical practice and educational activities.  Participates in planning, development and implementation of unit policies, goals and objectives and standard of nursing practice. Counsel and evaluate the performance and clinical practice of the nursing, technical, and clerical staff.  This includes staff development programs and unit orientation to ensure compliance with practice standards.  Identify and resolve unit operational problems.  Represent the unit on assigned clinical area and Hospital committees.  Maintain compliance with Federal and State regulations regarding affirmative action, safety and patient care. 

Actively collaborate with the Cardiac Procedure Unit Director of Clinical Operations and Divisional leadership in the development of annual budgets and activity forecasts; manages and provides variance reporting of activity, payroll, commodity and capital budgets; participates in new program development and implementation; and works closely with the Medical Directors and Cardiac Procedure Unit Director of Clinical Operations to create and support an environment where cutting edge and innovative care is provided to a continually growing number of cardiovascular patients.  Provides administrative/management leadership personnel management.

• Develop and implement unit goals and objectives which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consistent with national professional and regulatory guidelines.
• Integrate unit goals and objectives with Nursing goals and objectives.  Advise and assist with the establishment of priorities and institutional program development.
• Work closely with medical staff and other disciplines for the successful implementation of patient, unit and institutional objectives.  Assist in the resolution of interdisciplinary operating problems.
• Supervise operations of the unit.  Establish minimum/maximum staffing patterns to ensure quality patient care.  Initiate and implement a staffing schedule which is consistent with care requirements and responds to varying patient activity and patient mix.
• Identify and recommend specific staffing needs and position qualifications consistent with the respective unit objectives and patient case mix.
• Interview and select qualified personnel.
• Evaluate performance of nursing staff responsible for patient care unit.  Make recommendations for merit awards and personnel classification changes.  Counsel and discipline nursing staff to enable achievement of unit and institutional objectives, particularly related to high quality patient care.
• Interpret and implement University and hospital personnel policies and programs and ensure their uniform and correct application.
• Project and monitor personnel budget for patient care unit.  Provide information regarding budget variances to the Cardiac Procedure Unit Director of Clinical Operations.
• Collaborate and coordinate with other disciplines to plan, evaluate, and implement the commodity budget for the clinical care unit(s).
• Initiate and implement in-service guidelines for unit level orientation and staff development.  Encourage and provide opportunities for continuing education of the nursing, technical and clerical staff.
• Initiate, plan, analyze, and participate in Nursing and ancillary staff development programs and workshops.
• Participate in concurrent and retrospective evaluation of patient care consistent with the hospital quality improvement programs.  Through this review process, evaluate and recommend changes and improvements in areas affecting the quality and safety of patient care.
• Establish guidelines with the nursing faculty, which support the institutional goal of providing the primary clinical environment for nursing students.  Facilitate, coordinate, and monitor the clinical experience of nursing and other students.
• Initiate and cooperate in the applied research in health care in keeping with the institutional objectives of maintaining prominence in developing new modes of clinical practice.
• Formulate professional goals and prepare written evaluation for appropriate staff.
• Provide coordination between management and patient care activities that are consistent with the institutional objectives for achieving high standards of patient care, as well as other institutional goals and objectives. 
• Provide essential coordination between patient care units, recovery area, Anesthesia and inpatient units for safe patient care and efficient throughput that is consistent with unit institutional goals and objectives.
• Serve as MPlan Dyad leader with CPU-EP and CPU-Cath Medical Directors
• Planning, coordinating, and managing the clinical and administrative operations of the cardiac procedures unit.  This includes supervising nursing and assistive personnel and participating in managing budgets, payroll, commodities, staffing and staff reviews, participation in the implementation of patient care and quality assurance standards; and planning, organizing, and evaluating CPU practice and educational activities.
• Plan, assign and supervise the work of CPU nursing and support staff; serve as contact person for physicians on issues such as status of cases, procedural rooms to add on rooms to add cases, etc. 
• Provide clinical direction, procedural support in all areas of CPU, providing care to patient populations across the age continuum.
• Supervise direct clinical nursing care, serving as clinical resource to unit staff.
• Actively participate in orienting, precepting and supporting clinical staff; provide periodic review and feedback to unit staff.
• Provide supervision, counseling, coaching, discipline and evaluation of unit staff.
• Participate in new program development and implementation.
• To participate in planning, organizing and evaluating patient care standards, guidelines and educational activities for both patients and staff.
• Lead and participate in continuous quality improvement programs.
• Fosters a culture of patient and family centered care by creating a positive and caring experience with every interaction. Recognizes Internal and External customers and continually looks for ways to improve service for Internal and External customers. Required to regularly provide patient care as needed. 
• Share call rotation with Nurse leaders for off hours as a resource for clinical and operational issues.

This position reports directly to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer for UH/CVC, who reports to the Chief Nursing Officer, UH/CVC.

Supervision Exercised

The position supervises the clinical staff within the Cardiac Procedures Unit, including nurses, technologists, sheath pullers and paramedics.

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.  
• Master's degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered). If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
• Two (2) years recent leadership experience, to include demonstrated leadership, management, communication, counseling, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution and group process skills
• Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence
• Nurse Leadership certification or completion within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first.  Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role.  Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC).  Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).  See full list here

• Two (2) years recent supervisory experience in a healthcare setting; preferably in a cardiology procedural care setting
• Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence
• Recent experience in Nursing Management in a tertiary care setting.
• Demonstrated ability to assess, interpret and analyze nursing practice in a procedure-focused area independently and collaboratively
• Demonstrated leadership and management skills including personnel management and the ability to perform as a role model for Nursing Staff. 
• Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a manner that fosters teambuilding and provides visionary direction for team members.
• Experience with change management process.
• Evidence of successful implementation of initiatives positively impacting and improving patient care outcomes.

• Expertise and familiarity with High Reliability Organization Skills training.
• Certified Nurse Manager and Leader Certification (CNML).
