The Neuro Critical Care Unit (NCCU) is a 24 bed ICU that cares for patients from neurosurgery, neurology, stroke, otolaryngology, and oral maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) services. Medical problems most often treated to this unit include: thrombectomies, post-operative craniotomies for brain tumors, cerebral aneurysms, intracranial hemorrhage/hematomas, severe head and/or spinal cord injuries, increased intracranial pressure, caring for and assessing free flaps, doppler usage, tracheostomy care/management, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), Myasthenia Gravis, Status Epilepticus, and Guillain-Barre syndrome.

The D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is a 12-story hospital that will house 264 private rooms capable of converting to intensive care; a state-of-the-art neurosciences center. High-level, specialty care services for cardiovascular and thoracic patients will also be housed, along with advanced imaging. The 690,000 square foot hospital which also features twenty surgical and three interventional radiology suites is being constructed adjacent to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, with plans for bridge and tunnel connections to existing inpatient care facilities. The anticipated opening of the new D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is Fall 2025.

The Clinical Nurse Supervisor will partner with the Clinical Nursing Director and the Clinical Nurse Specialist in the planning and management of the clinical and administrative operation of the Adult Neuro Critical Care Unit.

• To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, service, education and research.
• To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements.
• Reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director. 
• Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.
• Functional and administrative supervision of the nursing and support staff personnel as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.

Personnel Management:

• Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
• Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
• Participate in counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
• Participate in the development, implementation, and revision of individual performance plans.
• Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
• Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.

Clinical Practice:

• Provide bedside care to NCCU patient population as determined by staffing needs and the Clinical Nursing Director. 
• Provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff.

Management of Clinical Area:

• Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
• Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
• Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
• Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
• Participate in the monitoring of department payroll and commodity expenditures.
• Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
• Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.
• Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks.
• Collaborate with Clinical Nursing Director, Educational Coordinator and Clinical Nurse Specialist to implement competency based educational programming and evaluation.
• Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Quality Assurance and Research:

• Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit quality improvement activities. 
• Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
• Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

Expectations of the position:

• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
• Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Clinical Nursing Director, unit leadership, administrators, physicians, peers, and subordinates.

Required Educational Requirements: 

Applicant must meet one of the following: 

Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR an Associates degree or Diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing.

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
• Minimum of five (5) years RN experience.
• Minimum of two (2) years of recent (within the last five years) RN experience in critical care.
• Nurse Leadership certification or completion within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
• Demonstrated leadership ability/potential including charge nurse, team leader or other management experience.

• Two (2) years of Neuro ICU RN experience.
• Knowledge of or experience with complex neuro ICU patient population
• Know of or experience with comprehensive stroke program requirements
• Previous supervisory/demonstrated leadership experience.
• Master of Science Nursing or current enrollment in MSN program
• Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.
• Consultative and teaching skills.
• LEAN training

Hours/Week: 40 hours

Shift: Night Shift, all shifts and weekends will be required based on the needs of the unit.

Some staffing may be required per unit needs and Clinical Nursing Director request.
