Job Summary

 

Accurately and completely assembles and packages patient orders within the confines of job function.  Provides timely and customer friendly service during the delivery, set-up and retrieval inventory, supplies, and equipment.  Accurately and compliantly adheres to all documentation requirements and documentation tracking expectations. As applicable, answers patient questions or directs patients to the appropriate professional/clinical staff.  Experience in a customer service role and/or delivery role generally required, Under FLSA, incumbents in this position are nonexempt.

Responsibilities*

 

      Essential:

  • Pick, pull, and pack items required to fulfill patient orders for home delivery.
  • Perform and provide delivery, set-up, and retrieval service in the home care setting for pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
  • Transport medical, surgical, and pharmaceutical supplies and equipment to patients? homes according to a prearranged schedule.  
  • Assist patients in securing pharmaceutical, medical supplies, and equipment within the home adhering to appropriate storage guidelines.
  • Demonstrate competent adherence to regulatory standards for transport and infection control of patient home inventory.
  • Inspect, maintain, set-up and provide instruction for durable medical equipment in order to ensure adherence to regulatory standards both within the institution and in patients' homes.
  • Assist in acquisition and maintenance of appropriate inventories of pharmaceuticals and other medical/surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Assemble medical/surgical supply kits, select, package and label order packages or containers readying them for shipment/delivery.
  • Documents daily delivery/mileage data.
  • Accurately and completely documents shipping manifest detail.
  • Performs vehicle checks against standard requirements; ensures vehicle is clean at all times, adheres to designated placement of clean and dirty items; secures items during transport.
  • Understands and demonstrates compliance with SDS for all vehicle chemicals. 
  • Initiates and answers phone calls to assist patients that are having delivery problems/issues.
  • Collaborate and communicate with coworkers effectively through direct interaction with pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, nurses and dietitians, other home care service technicians and Home Care Services (HCS) staff.
  • Maximize work efficiency through the use of computers and other technologies as evidenced by proficient skill in accessing and entering information necessary to perform job functions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and proprietary information by observing legal and ethical guidelines for safeguarding the confidentiality of patient and proprietary information.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date order / delivery records and other documentation as specified by UMHS Home Care policy and procedure.
  • Communicate pertinent changes regarding patients, including demographics and supply issues, to appropriate staff such as Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacists, Dietitians, Nurses and other Home Care Services staff.
  • Participate in night, weekend, and holiday on call program.  Adhere to alternating shift, day, and weekend rotation work assignments.
  • Maintain competency in all job functions.
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Chauffeurs License within 60 days of hire date.

 

      Other Related Duties:

  • Complies with all University of Michigan Health System and departmental standards and expectations.
  • Supports the department's commitment to continuous improvement activities and principles through positive and respectful contribution in all problem-solving and change processes at Home Care Services.
  • Participates in department committees and work teams as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary
  • Valid chauffer's license with less than six points for moving or other violations
  • Valid Michigan driver's license with a good driving record necessary.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic regulations
  • Thorough knowledge of safety precautions to be followed while operating a motor vehicle.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and conflict resolution skill.
  • Meets physical qualifications:
    • The employee will be able to perform the assigned duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations.
    • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.
    • Functional visual acuity and hearing for accurate assessment and recording of patient observations and other information in patient record documentation.
    • Manual dexterity to perform required procedures and activities proficiently and safely.
    • Ability to move up to 75 pounds to perform the safe transfer of equipment and supplies.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • A minimum of one-year experience in patient care activity with a demonstrated knowledge of regulations, standards, and guidelines applicable to pharmacies.
  • Experience in the health care field and/or equivalent experience as a pharmacy technician or medical assistant.
  • Computer / keyboard data entry skills and experience
  • Delivery experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Forklift Operation certification.

Work locations will include primarily 7300 W. Joy Rd, Dexter, MI and 2850 S. Industrial Hwy, Ann Arbor, MI
