Job Summary

 

A technician position is available in the Huycke Lab of cell & developmental mechanobiology at the University of Michigan. The lab combines high-resolution microscopy of living tissues and organoids with single-cell, mechanical, and genetic approaches to study mammalian gastrointestinal growth and regeneration. The Huycke Lab is a new lab opening in early 2025 in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB). The department is home to many interdisciplinary labs and provides a rich environment for career development within the biomedical sciences that will further be complemented by training and mentoring within the Huycke Lab. The lab seeks to hire a self-motivated research technician who will assist in launching the lab.

The desired candidate will work under the guidance of the Principal Investigator to manage a mouse colony, perform routine experiments, train new personnel, and will additionally have the opportunity to work on collaborative research projects within the lab.

Responsibilities*

 

We seek a highly motivated individual that will successfully contribute to the following responsibilities in a team-oriented environment:

Lab management and organization (50% effort)

  • Standard mouse colony maintenance: tagging/tailing, PCR genotyping, and husbandry
  • Place orders for the lab, correspond with vendors, maintain inventories, coordinate lab safety protocols, maintain equipment, autoclave and wash dishware

Research (40% effort)

Work in collaboration with other lab members and the Principal Investigator to perform and collect data using the following routine techniques:

  • Confocal imaging
  • Tissue collection and processing for immunofluorescence 
  • Plasmid cloning and PCR
  • Mammalian cell culture

Training (10% effort)

  • Train new members, including postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates, in the techniques noted above and provide general lab orientation

Required Qualifications*

 
  • High School Diploma and 1 year of experience
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with common molecular biology techniques such as PCR and gel electrophoresis
  • Knowledge of mouse genetics
  • Experience working with cell culture

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field
  • Significant expertise in handling mice, including mouse colony management and husbandry
  • Previous experience with microscopy and data analysis
  • Experience working in developmental and cell biology research environments
  • Ability to problem-solve and work independently
  • Flexibility to take on new tasks as the lab grows

Additional Information

 

This position will not begin until January 27th, 2025. This is a full-time, 12-month term-limited position with a possibility of renewal based on the availability of funding, the availability of work, and overall successful performance.
