Job Summary

 

Under the supervision of lab PI Dr. Hillmer, co-Director at the University of Michigan PET Center, the candidate will conduct and execute projects involving the development and analysis of research brain imaging data. This includes managing aspects of database maintenance, data processing, and data analysis for projects in the lab. The Research Associate will:

  • Contribute to the setup, operation, and maintenance of PET image data processing infrastructure. Organize and collect quality control data. Assist in the determination of the causes of the data anomalies and the execution of new procedures and data correction techniques.
  • Provide assistance in planning research experiments, organizing and analyzing brain imaging data, and troubleshooting issues. 
  • Research and make recommendations regarding the design and implementation of new methodology, procedures and protocols for improved accuracy, reliability, and analysis throughput. 
  • Design and develop image and data processing programs in multiple programming languages to handle new types of data or to facilitate brain imaging data analyses. 
  • Assist in writing reports for inclusion with grant proposals, application, and reports to industry partners. 
  • Perform literature reviews as appropriate. Draft and edit papers or portions of papers for publication. 
  • Assist in the upkeep of the lab computer system including data retrieval, system upgrades, patient info and computer security. Train and assist collaborators on the use of software and systems. 
  • Organize and present results from image and data analyses to physicians, physicists, other staff and industry collaborators.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Designs, plans, implements and evaluates complex multifaceted research projects/systems, including data analysis method development, adaptation and validation. 
  • Collaborates with PI to define research endeavors and the development of research hypothesis and approach. 
  • Solves complex methodology, protocol, procedural and research problems through design of techniques, procedures and policies that will achieve research goals. 
  • Investigates, analyzes and evaluates complex data, data collection systems and methods to reach scientific conclusions and ensures the integrity of research data. 
  • Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's Degree in a scientific discipline
  • 1-3 years of experience in related field.
  • Well-developed computer and programming skills in a wide range of computer applications.
  • Ability to develop new computer applications.
  • Quantitative and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to effectively, efficiently, independently and work under pressure. 
  • Ability to set priorities among multiple competing tasks.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Established background in neuroimaging methodology in particular and biological/medical research in general.
  • Preferred programming experience in Python, MATLAB, R, TCL/TL, and/or  C++.
