Job Summary

 

The Department of Green Chemistry and Biochemistry is looking for students to work as laboratory assistants in teaching labs during the Winter 2025 semester. Lab assistant positions are filled on a per semester basis. Lab assistant weekly schedules are dependent on the course that they are assisting with. Lab assistants will report to the Natural Sciences Laboratory Supervisor and the instructor for their assigned course.

 

Responsibilities*

 

The primary responsibility of a laboratory assistant is helping faculty during teaching labs. All lab assistants are expected to:

  • Answer student questions, including helping with calculations
  • Assist students with proper set up and use of laboratory equipment
  • Know locations and appropriate usage of all safety equipment
  • Follow all departmental safety rules
  • Ensure good housekeeping in the lab by doing the following:
    • Confirm that there are sufficient quantities of reagents for the next lab
    • Ensure that all lab equipment is stored properly
    • Refill paper towels and soap dispensers as needed
    • Wipe benchtops and chemical dispensing stations at end of lab 
    • Report any broken equipment to the Lab Supervisor

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Must be a currently enrolled UM-Flint student or recently graduated, within the last 6 months
  • Successful completion and understanding of the course that is being assigned, equivalent experience, or higher level chemistry labs
  • A demonstrated ability to apply laboratory safety rules
  • Must be friendly and approachable to all members of the classroom
  • Recommendation by a laboratory instructor from the Department of Green Chemistry and Biochemistry

  • Excellent communication skills
  • A strong understanding of the material being presented
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues that may arise in the lab

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
