Job Summary

 

The Life Sciences Institute (LSI) is looking for a Desktop Support Specialist Intermediate to join our professional staff. You will work as part of the Information Technology (IT) team that provides computing and technology support for faculty, researchers, staff, and students in addition to administering central LSI services. You will be responsible for desktop and event support and report to the LSI Desktop Support Supervisor.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot:
    • Macintosh and Windows desktop computers
    • Network printers and peripheral devices on Windows and Macintosh systems
    • Desktop productivity and scientific software
    • Computer hardware and software used with PC controlled scientific instruments
  • Receive, tag, and track ordered hardware and software using the LSI inventory system
  • Work with software, hardware, and scientific instrument vendors on support, troubleshooting, and warranty repairs
  • Work with staff and faculty to specify or customize computer hardware suitable for the U-M and LSI computing environment
  • Provide technology assistance to members of the LSI community
  • Advise and train computing system users in the capabilities of LSI and U-M resources and software packages
  • Setup and install LSI and U-M resources (printers, storage, VPN) on LSI managed and personally owned computers
  • Help maintain the security of desktop computers through patching, updates, and maintenance of virus and spyware protection software
  • Hardware lifecycle tracking
  • Write and revise general documentation describing features, capabilities and procedures of LSI and U-M systems
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Required Qualifications*

 
  • An Associate degree focused on computer-related coursework or an equivalent combination of education and computer support experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience supporting both Windows and Macintosh computing environments
  • Minimum 2 years of experience demonstrating troubleshooting abilities including good use of reference tools and self-instruction
  • Prior experience working with colleagues of varying technological skills
  • Knowledge of data network troubleshooting and concepts
  • Ability to create new documentation for information and technology processes and services
  • Ability to manage unique computer hardware and software inventory
  • Ability to transport and install IT equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Comfortable working in a wet laboratory environment

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows systems management concepts and printing systems
  • Familiarity with desktop productivity and scientific software
  • Familiarity with Linux and High-Performance Computing
  • Familiarity with computer controlled scientific instruments
  • Knowledge of wet laboratory safety best practices

Additional Information

 

You will have a work location at the Life Sciences Institute on the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan campus.  Under current institute policy, a hybrid schedule of on-site and remote work is allowable, subject to business needs requiring on-site presence.
