Job Summary

 

The Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Center is an NIH-funded research center focused on conducting and supporting Alzheimer's disease and related dementia research. A key aim of the center's research is to work with underrepresented communities to address racial and ethnic disparities in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The center also spans beyond research by promoting state-of-the-art care and wellness for individuals and families affected by dementia and increasing dementia awareness through education and outreach across the state. 

The Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Center (MADC) is seeking a full time MADC Clinical Research Technician to join its research team. Location is at the Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Center in Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan Detroit Center in Detroit. Hours are Monday - Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. 

We are seeking an experienced, positive, highly motivated, organized, autonomous person with excellent multi-tasking ability and record-keeping skills to work with principal investigators and other research team members to accurately and efficiently carry out a range of tasks associated with a variety of research studies. The candidate will be able to operate in a semi-independent manner to assist in clinical research and related projects. Job duties include coordinating and facilitating the timing of biospecimen collection for research patients with multiple study teams and integrating the workflow of many studies running simultaneously. Assist study teams with research study coordination including interacting with older, adult research participants and performing phlebotomy at the MADC in Ann Arbor, at the University of Michigan Detroit Center in Detroit, and other Center affiliated sites. Other duties include entering and managing research patient laboratory data, placing routine clinical laboratory research orders in EPIC MiChart, and processing biospecimens. This includes labeling, storing, handling and shipping of specimens to NIH repositories, University of Michigan Pathology and maintaining lab supplies. Assist with special projects, in-services, evaluating new equipment and techniques, and other additional assigned responsibilities. The characteristic duties and responsibilities of this position may evolve over time to match changing needs and priorities.

This position may independently provide study coordination for simple and moderately complex clinical research studies.  As a member of a coordination team, this position may help support a portfolio of projects with varying levels of complexity.   • Perform the assigned duties in research specimen procurement to assure accurate and timely collection, order entry, transport, processing, and storage of specimens 
  • Integrate the workflow and biospecimen collection of many studies running simultaneously 
  • Assist study teams with research biospecimen collecting including collecting, entering, and managing related research patient laboratory data 
  • Under direction of study PI, order study specific lab work and diagnostic procedures 
  • Work with lab services and Michigan Brain Bank staff to maintain lab supply inventory and equipment 
  • Complete source documents for accurate tracking, collection, and recording of study data and biospecimens 
  • Perform phlebotomy on older, adult research patients at the Michigan Alzheimer?s Disease Center in Ann Arbor, at the University of Michigan Detroit Center, Detroit, and other MADC-affiliated sites
  • Label, centrifuge, aliquot, distribute, store, transport, and/or ship laboratory specimens (ambient and frozen samples) to NIH repositories for multiple research studies and U-M Pathology Laboratory 
  • Comply with safety instructions and observe safe work practices 
  • Provide total customer focus to meet the needs of every patient, internal and external, medical staff, research staff, patients and families 
  • Use effective communication including written, verbal and information technology skills. Work effectively with others to accomplish goals

This position receives direct supervision and reports directly to the Clinical Core Manager.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Experience with human sample collection or willingness to learn biospecimen processing and storage procedures 
  • 1 - 2 years of experience performing phlebotomy on patients 
  • Valid driver's license 
  • Computer proficiency (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite) 
  • Confident and highly motivated with excellent multi-tasking ability and record-keeping skills 
  • Outstanding organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail  
  • Professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision 
  • Ability to work with diverse teams of people in a diplomatic, collaborative, and effective manner 
  • Ability to problem-solve and establish timelines and priorities 

CRC-Technician Level:

  • Associate degree in Health Science or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Minimum 1 years of directly related experience in clinical research and clinical trials is necessary. Please review SoCRA's Definition of a Clinical Research Professional qualifying experience prior to applying.

 

CRC-Assistant Level:

  • High school diploma or equivalent  

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • A Health Science degree and understanding of medical terminology and assessment of laboratory values
  • Experience with laboratory services and performing phlebotomy on the elderly population
  • Experience working and interacting with research participants
  • Experience working with older adults with/without memory loss
  • Demonstrated understanding of Good Clinical Practice and HIPAA
  • Reasonable knowledge of Michigan Medicine policies and procedures 
  • Certification or registration in an appropriate discipline
  • Previous experience with Epic, MiChart, REDCap

  • This position will be on site 5 days per week.
