Responsibilities*

 

Perform nursing services in the care and treatment of patients, provides direct patient care and assists in the maintenance of a safe environment that supports patient care needs in an ambulatory care setting.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibiltiies:

Observation/Monitoring:

  • Obtains vital signs, temperature, height, weight, oxygen saturation and pain scores; reports abnormal values to RN. Obtains other measurements, i.e. head circumference, abdominal girth, per unit standard.
  • Utilizes palpation/auscuitation and doppler to determine heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Observes, monitors, and reports the overt physical condition of assigned patient(s).
  • Measures and records intake and output, if needed.
  • Assists physician/provider during diagnostic procedures; assists and supports patient before and during procedures, assists in specimen collection.

Specimen Collection:

  • Performs point-of-care testing, maintains and calibrates equipment and supplies.
  • Collects specimens, including urine, stool, sputum and swabs, and performs urine determination including sugar, acetone, specific gravity protein, pH.
  • Performs finger/heel stick blood collection and chemstick test.
  • Transports blood and laboratory specimens.

Intravenous Lines

  • Discontinues peripheral IVs.

Patient ADLs

  • Accompanies, escorts, assists patients as needed.
  • Provides patient nourishment by performing such duties as passing and collecting trays, providing snacks/beverages, assists with ordering meals/snacks, feeds patients.

Environment

  • Stocks supplies and equipment in patient care spaces.
  • Transports materials, supplies, medications, specimens, patient belongings, equipment and medical records.
  • Cleans and maintains inventory and outdates of equipment and supplies in patient care spaces.
  • Cleans assigned equipment and areas of work.
  • Obtains, opens and arranges sterile instruments and supplies for specific procedures.
  • Cleans, packs, sterilizes and stores instruments.
  • Checks emergency equipment.

Will complete any additional duties as needed.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent;
  • Demonstrates active listening, written verbal and information technology skills;
  • Communicates effectively and respectfully;
  • Adheres to high standards of personal and professional conduct;
  • Exceptional attendance.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Completion of two years of nursing school course work including applicable clinical experience for the position.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated time management skills.
  • Previous patient care experience or relevant skills.
  • No lifting restrictions.
  • Familiarity with UMHS policies and procedures.

Work Schedule

 
  • Days/evenings/weekends - approximately 8-36 hrs/week
  • Able to work intermittently throughout the year during breaks and holidays
