What You'll Do

 

Reporting to the AEC Manager of Architecture, you will:

  • Provide design management for renovation projects of spaces within existing campus buildings that include classrooms, offices, research/laboratory space, ADA and code campus improvements, athletics/recreational sports, exterior forensic, food service, and student housing-based projects.  
  • Provide design management for renovation projects of existing campus buildings including classroom, office and research/laboratory space, student housing, athletics and recreational sports, exterior forensic and renovation projects, and food service projects
  • You will develop and manage the overall project scope, schedule, and associated cost estimates.  The project studies and/or designs may be internally self-performed or by partnering with a third-party consultant. You may also serve as the discipline or project lead.
  • Prepare reports/studies, designs, construction documents and specification documentation for self-performed architectural projects.  Key tasks include identifying and facilitating initial building condition assessments, programming and space planning, necessary equipment, and utility systems. Coordinate the overall design process with other disciplines and U-M partners.
  • Manage and coordinate consultant activities to ensure the successful completion of projects.  Key tasks include collectively identifying the project scope, schedule, and budget goals for studies and/or designs by third-party consultants.  Also, will develop Request for Proposals, negotiate & set up contractual agreements, review and approve payment invoices. 
  • Perform on-site field surveys in various building spaces to document existing conditions and better understand potential building interferences. Facilitate & assess building system conditions with project team members. Develop recommendations to address potential building interferences, deferred maintenance, energy efficiency, building code and accessibility concerns to help improve overall space.
  • Coordinate & support anticipated construction activities with fellow construction managers and project stakeholders. Review and evaluate contract bids and make recommendations on contract awards.
  • Review and approve design changes during construction. Review and approve shop submittals, conduct field surveys, and punch list reviews. Coordinate the work of contractors on small projects.
  • Oversee the quality control and peer review of prepared documents. Facilitate and address all user, architectural and engineering, and project support teams review comments/questions to ensure consensus and documents are appropriately completed.
  • Assure that all required University, State of Michigan, and Federal code-based review processes are successfully submitted and approved.
  • Draft and incorporate the appropriate design guidelines, technical specifications, and facility operating procedures into construction documents.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience developing design details for institutional/higher education buildings.
  • Licensed as a Registered Architect in Michigan, or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Experience applying and researching the Michigan Building Code, State of Michigan Bureau of Fire Safety rules, ADA standards and regulations for Accessibility, Michigan Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and partnering with consultants on projects.
  • Construction observation experience.
  • Experience in AutoCAD and Revit. Experience in Microstation a plus.
