Job Summary

 

Allied Health Associate Supervisors are members of the medical laboratory team, responsible for direct supervision of phlebotomists and phlebotomist specialists, specimen collection for patients at Michigan Medicine, and may be based in ambulatory or inpatient units.  They are responsible for following CLSI guidelines and must adhere to regulatory requirements determined by agencies including, but not limited to, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission.  They model institutional and departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities*

 

Customer Service:

  • Advanced knowledge in customer service and service recovery, responding quickly and professionally in stressful situations.
  • Models patient and family centered care practices.
  • Maintain customer rights in accordance with institutional policies by demonstrating respect for the individuality and wishes of others, honoring cultural and religious differences, maintaining confidentiality of information and demonstrating ethical behaviors based on honesty, fairness and equity.     

Specimen collection

  • Ability to collect specimens using all forms of access practiced at base location, including but not limited to, indwelling catheters, implanted ports and pediatric collection.   
  • Technically able to collect 1x2 and perform most difficult venipunctures successfully.
  • Assists in specimen collection as needed based on patient volume and staffing.

Computer Data Entry

  • When applicable, utilize SoftLab and/or SoftID LIS to complete lab ordering process and cancellations, as appropriate.
  • Exhibit advanced understanding of problem solving in MiChart and Soft applications.

Safety:

  • Model safe work practices at all times, and mentor staff to do the same.

Communication: 

  • Advanced communication skills including written, and verbal.
  • Use Outlook daily to read current memos and communicate with staff as needed. 
  • Continuously demonstrates good organizational skills and time management skills.
  • Conducts Huddles regularly to distribute and collect information .

Personnel:

  • Schedule staff appropriately to cover all areas, including weekends and holidays as needed.  Approve PTO requests based on available staffing.
  • Record bi-weekly pay using the Time and Labor Workcenter timekeeping system.
  • Monitor and record unscheduled absences, apply progressive discipline policies regarding attendance according to department guidelines.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations.
  • Provide regular feedback to staff promptly.
  • Observe interactions between staff and patients, assuring professionalism and demonstration of Michigan Medicine goals and values.

Training and Quality Assurance:

  • Assist in training, documentation of training, and development of training material.
  • Coach staff in problem solving, developing expertise and finding resources for information.
  • Monitor quality activities within the unit, including but not limited to, productivity of staff, quality of specimen collection and proper infection prevention techniques.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance projects, bringing forward ideas as they develop.
  • Assist in development, implementation and revision of policies and procedures as needed.

Professional Development:

  • Use skills and resources to improve performance in CW Phlebotomy.
  • Actively participates in meetings/committees/in-services.
  • Arrange for staff to attend in-services, classes, and meetings, as needed.

Required Qualifications*

 

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment. 

  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • At least 3 years of Phlebotomy experience.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in phlebotomy, including three (3) years of pediatric phlebotomy experience.
  • Phlebotomy Certification or equivalent coursework.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment.
  • Proficient in basic computer functions.

Work Schedule

 

This full time, 40 hour position is on the midnight shift and will require rotating weekends, holidays and on-call schedule with other staff.

Background Screening
