Responsibilities*

 

The Department of Recreational Services is seeking part-time student and non-student lifeguards to help create a safe environment in the Recreation Center pool. Shifts may be days or evenings, weekdays or weekends, depending on availability.  Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise pool area and warns swimmers of improper activities or danger.
  • Administer first aid, rescue swimmers in distress, and administer CPR/AED, when necessary.
  • Perform basic water tests to ensure pool chemicals are at appropriate levels.
  • Enforcement of facility policies and pool regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness of deck area & report issues to supervisor
  • Attend scheduled in-service training sessions.

*NOTE:  The pool is currently closed until early August 2024 due to facility renovations.  Anticipated pool opening is mid-August 2024.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or ability to obtain prior to start date
  • Ability to swim 300 yards (200 crawl & 100 backstroke).  Retrieval of submerged object from deep end of pool.  Tread water 2 minutes.
  • Available to work during times pool is open;  Monday - Friday, 11am - 7pm and/or Saturday, 9am - 1pm

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Previous lifeguarding experience
  • Customer service experience

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
