Job Summary

 

The Department of Pathology is seeking a Supervisor (Allied Health Intermediate Supervisor) for the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, a full-service, 24 hour a day academic laboratory with state-of-the-art testing and a robust test development pipeline. The chosen individual will serve as a technical resource for staff and an administrative lead for the laboratory. The supervisor will be responsible for quality assurance of testing processes, training, competency and education of staff, scheduling of staff, and payroll approval. They will also help coordinate validation and implementation of new tests, assist in writing procedures, participate in interviews and hiring, and facilitate two-way communication between staff and laboratory leadership. Responsibilities*

 

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
In addition to the duties below, the supervisor may also perform the duties of a senior technologist (smaller laboratories, fewer than 6 direct reports).  

Operational oversight:
A. Personnel
1. Participate in Interviews, select and extend job offers to potential employees.
2. Provides or coordinates orientation and onboarding to lab and departmental policies to all testing personnel.


B. Training, Competency and Education
1. Create educational opportunities for self and others to obtain additional skills and knowledge through a variety of methods.
2. Fulfill and assist employees with departmental continuing education requirements.
3. Oversee and evaluate training of all personnel performing laboratory testing.
4. Review and approve training checklists.
5. verify staff are trained and competent prior to performing independent testing on patient samples.
6. Manages performance competency documentation for testing personnel.


C. Staff Engagement
1. Determine performance objectives for each employee and conduct formal reviews quarterly.
2. Evaluate employee skills and assess educational and training needs.
3. Provide an environment that motivates and enriches staff based on engagement activities and survey feedback.


D. Departmental responsibilities
1. Review and approve paid time off requests.
2. Approve payroll for direct reports.

3. Provide day-to-day administrative supervision of qualified personnel performing testing and reporting of high complexity test results.
4. Schedule employees to provide adequate and equitable staffing for all areas.
5. Oversight of inventory control process.
6. Communicate pertinent information via emails staff meetings and huddles.
7. Implement new and revised policies and procedures in the laboratory framework.
8. Serve as technical resource for staff, and pathology operations.
9. Working knowledge of departmental documentation control system, laboratory information systems and other business systems utilized by Michigan Medicine.


E. Discipline.
1. Provide timely and constructive feedback to staff.
2. Participate in resolution of employee grievances.
3. Coach, and counsel, as necessary.
4. Enforce policy items such items as attendance, dress code and code of conduct.


F. Testing
1. Monitor and make changes to workflow achieve maximum productivity and quality.
2. Collaborate with the CLIA designated Technical Supervisor to implement test development and validation of protocols and methodologies.
3. Write new and revised procedures, validation and implementation plans for assays and instrumentation.
4. Awareness of information technology tasks, including writing service tickets and monitoring ongoing HIS/LIS projects.
5. Maintain expertise/competency in one or more areas under supervision to adequately assess performance of staff or assist in the event of short staffing situations.


G. Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Compliance
1. Responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
2. Assure that all remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory?s established performance specifications.
3. Responsible for reviewing all high complexity testing performed by trained high school graduates qualifying as high complexity testing personnel within 24 hours when a CLIA qualified general supervisor is absent.
4. Coordinate, and participate in monitoring the laboratory Quality Assurance Program
5. Assist with compliance of regulatory agencies (i.e., CLIA, CAP) rules and regulations and implements changes as needed.

H. Management
1. Coordinate with the management team to optimize workflow with the laboratory, to continually improve operations and to plan future changes.
2. Take an active part in introducing new procedures and selecting new equipment.
3. Work with Laboratory Manager to evaluate changes to the lab including equipment, supplies and staffing.
4. Inform Laboratory Manager and Pathology leadership of problems or changes in procedures that impact operations. 

I. Other duties
1. Perform on departmental or laboratory projects, as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

 

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science or biological science, which is directly related to the duties of the position is required. 
  • Must have expertise in one or more areas of clinical microbiology testing.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a clinical laboratory, 3-5 years of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Must have expertise in one or more areas of testing. 
  • Requires frequent (standing/walking/sitting/hand pipetting) for long periods of time and the ability to lift 25 lbs.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Demonstrated management experience of professional and support staff in a CLIA Clinical Lab setting.
  • Expertise in bacteriology, including anaerobes, laboratory automation and/or antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and/or train students, junior laboratory personnel and residents in laboratory techniques and/or protocols.
  • Ability to work independently or as a member of our team.
  • Excellent attendance, ability to multi-task, prioritize appropriately, and exercise good judgment.

Work Schedule

 

This full time, 40 hour position is Exempt (minimum of 40 hours/week) and is on the day/evening shift, and will include rotating weekends, holidays and on call work schedule.  May receive an average of 24 hours/week (60%) to accomplish their extra duties.

Additional Information

 

 Works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials.
 May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment and pneumatic tube system.

Background Screening

 

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
