The Marsal Family School of Education seeks an intermittent lecturer to support EDUC 215: Exploring Education, a three-credit Education Studies course that includes an intensive study abroad experience. This is a 25% appointment, equating to roughly 10 hours per week.
EDUC 215 is designed for undergraduate students who are curious about education and interested in exploring teaching and learning through cross-cultural and experiential learning. Using education as a lens, students consider what may be universal about teaching and learning and what is shaped by local culture, identities, language, history, community, and geography.
The course emphasizes perspective-taking, culturally sustaining teaching practices, global and community-based education, and Indigenous education. Students learn through a combination of on-campus coursework and an immersive educational experience abroad that includes school and community visits, engagement with local educators, and collaboration with university faculty and students.
During the 2027 study abroad experience in Ecuador, students will explore educational and cultural contexts in Quito and surrounding areas and spend significant time collaborating with students and educators at Saminay, an Indigenous school in Otavalo. The course is designed to help students examine their own assumptions, learn from educational practices situated in another cultural context, and develop a deeper understanding of the relationships among education, culture, language, identity, community, and place.
