Course Title(s): EEB116: Biology of Sex
Course Objectives: The main goal of this course is to help students understand the nature of science and how to evaluate the quality of science. The focus of the course is on the biology of sex from an evolutionary perspective. By surveying a wide scope of diverse organisms and some amazing sexual adaptations, students will come to better appreciate how the sex lives of other organisms can help us understand ourselves, including the basis for mate choice and mate preference, the role of developmental biology, the endocrine system, and genetics and neurobiology, as well as the evolutionary costs and benefits of sex. The course also examines facts and fallacies about sex, including aspects of human sexual biology. By the end of the course, students will not only have a greater appreciation of the diversity and the role of sex in much of life on earth, but they will also improve their scientific literacy so that they can navigate and understand the role of science for us as individuals and as a society.
