Job Summary

 

The University of Michigan Law School is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Accountant Intermediate to join its finance team. The finance team supports the Law School in budget planning, financial reporting and analysis, accounting and financial management, grants and other funding, financial operations, and internal controls and compliance.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, this position will focus on accounting, financial reporting, and the financial administration of internal and external grants and other funding. The position will work closely with members of the finance team, faculty, staff, and program administrators across the Law School.

Responsibilities*

 
  • Maintain the Law School's chartfield and related accounting structure.
  • Review and process journal entries and other accounting transactions.
  • Perform account reconciliations, review financial activity, research discrepancies, and coordinate corrections as needed.
  • Complete month-end and year-end accounting and financial close activities.
  • Reconcile internal and external grants and other funding, including funding for Law School programs and initiatives.
  • Coordinate pre-award activities, including budget development, application submission to ORSP, and application preparation across schools and units.
  • Monitor post-award financial activity to ensure expenditures are consistent with approved budgets and funding requirements.
  • Develop standard and ad hoc financial reports and analyses and provide financial information to faculty, staff, and program administrators as needed.
  • Interpret and apply university accounting policies and procedures and assist colleagues with financial questions.
  • Serve as a backup and cross-train in other areas of the finance team's work as needed.

Required Qualifications*

 
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated success managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including strong Excel skills, and comfort learning new systems and technologies.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success working both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential financial information.

Desired Qualifications*

 
  • Background in higher education or nonprofit financial administration.
  • Knowledge of pre-award and post-award activities for grants and other funding sources.
  • Familiarity with MPathways, eResearch, and other university administrative systems.
  • Proficiency with financial reporting tools such as BusinessObjects.
  • Knowledge of university financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
