The University of Michigan, one of the nation's leading public universities, is seeking applicants for a tax advisor position in the Tax Compliance and Planning Office. This office provides tax consulting services and compliance support to the University of Michigan (U-M) and its affiliates. U-M includes Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn campuses as well as Michigan Medicine. Affiliates include the University Musical Society, Alumni Association, Michigan Health Corporation and U-M Health and their subsidiaries, e.g., University of Michigan Health-West, Sparrow Health System, among others. This office manages tax risks arising from various operations, including the long-term portfolio, tax-exempt bonds, athletics, healthcare as well as keeps the university in good standing with tax compliance with all federal, state, local and international taxing jurisdictions.

• Research and keep current with the tax law and reporting responsibilities.  
• Develop 'best practices', including policies and tool kits in managing resulting tax risks. 
• Communicate with stakeholders, including schools, colleges and units as well as with legal and tax representatives, e.g., with the investment firms, taxing agencies, and institutional peers. 

• Prepare and review various federal, state and international tax returns and forms for multiple entities, including exempt organizations, partnerships, taxable corporations, charitable vehicles, 

  such as charitable remainder trusts, as well as multiple activities and transactions, including investments in foreign entities, among others.
   

The candidate must possess the following:

• Bachelor's degree in business administration, 

  finance or accounting, or an equivalent combination of education is required.

• A CPA certification or a master's degree in accounting or a related field is desired.
• Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with a variety of individuals and units.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of staff.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet pressing due dates.
• Excellent analytical and independent problem solving skills.

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
