The Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention is a transdisciplinary institute that works to engage the breadth of expertise across the University of Michigan, with input from nonacademic stakeholders, to generate knowledge and advance solutions that will decrease firearm injury in the United States. The Institute fosters research that is mindful of the critical social and historical context of firearms in the US, and encourages various viewpoints, disciplinary perspectives, and approaches. The Institute also serves as a national hub for research that drives new solutions to this public health crisis and trains the next generation of leaders in the field. The Institute is supported by an organizational structure that provides internal oversight and external guidance and focuses activities across six cores: 1) research and scholarship, 2) education and training, 3) community outreach and translation, 4) policy, 5) implementation, and 5) data and methods; and across six pillars: firearm-related suicide, firearm-related intimate partner violence, community violence, unintentional shootings, police shootings, and mass/school violence.
A Research Coordinator is sought to work closely on projects within the Research & Scholarship Core team at the Institute. Supervised by the Core Manager, this position will specifically provide support to faculty and postdoctoral scholars throughout the pre- and post-award grant process, including grant proposal preparation and submission, budget development and monitoring, progress reporting, IRB applications and amendments, data use agreements, research project start-up tasks, research project coordination, and other research administration and regulatory-related tasks. This position will also provide assistance with developing and implementing internal pilot award programs, tracking progress, outcomes, and financial expenditures of pilot programs, coordinating research award nominations, and supporting the Core's efforts to foster collaboration and connect firearm injury prevention scholarship across the University. The team is looking for a skilled writer with a history of supporting successful grant proposal applications to a variety of federal and foundation funding sources and experience managing research projects at various stages.
The successful candidate is expected to understand and support the conduct of research within all federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
The primary duties of this position will include, but will not be limited to:
- Supporting the development and submission of proposals on behalf of Institute faculty members and affiliates, including writing and editing proposal sections, developing support documentation, organizing proposal components, assessing applications for completeness and accuracy, and aiding in proposal submission.
- Assisting with pre- and post-award grant management responsibilities, including budget development and tracking, reporting progress, applying for and amending/renewing IRB applications, developing data use agreements, research project start-up tasks, and other research administration and regulatory-related duties.
- Coordinating the development, implementation, and assessment of Research & Scholarship Core program activities, such as research funding programs for pilot projects, internal proposal reviews, and award nominations.
- Supporting the Institute's goal of promoting collaboration and connecting firearms injury prevention scholarship within the University through the organization of scientific working groups, network activity, and faculty involvement.
- Assisting with the planning, coordination, and facilitation of meetings, workshops, seminars, and other Research & Scholarship Core events and activities.
- Assisting with the development of language and content for Research & Scholarship Core events and programs, such as funding solicitations, newsletters, websites, annual reports, and other communications.
- Coordinating projects including recruiting participants, assisting with data collection, data management, participating in the interpretation of data and manuscript preparation.
- Consulting with users to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research requirements and collaborating in development of new techniques and instruments.
- Developing protocols and criteria for programs and projects, gathering data, supervising data collection and verification, and conducting and providing oversight for literature reviews.
- Formulating research methods and suggesting options for improving quality, identifying potential problems, recommending and implementing solutions.
- Developing surveys and protocols.
- Tracking and reporting on activities and preparing reports.
- Participating in the development and implementation of new projects as the Institute receives additional funding.
