The Short Stay Unit at Troy Center for Specialty Care is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to assist surgeons in the medical care and management of adult surgical short stay, postoperative and preoperative patients.

The Troy Medical Campus will be University of Michigan Health's first clinical presence in the Oakland County market. We are building a state-of-the-art specialty care campus in the heart of Troy where a deeply human commitment to personalized care will come together with world-class expertise, cutting-edge therapies, and a legacy of more than 175 years of transformative research to help patients and families in Oakland County and beyond find their Michigan Answers. The campus will feature two outpatient facilities with over a dozen specialty programs, including Cancer services, Musculoskeletal/Sports Medicine, and Reproductive Medicine, as well as a surgery/procedure center, comprehensive imaging services, laboratory, pharmacy, and therapy services. The campus is conveniently located near I-75, surrounded by popular shopping and dining, and features free parking, on-site cafe, with facilities committed to sustainable, environmentally responsible practices. 

The Short Stay Unit (SSU) APP provides evaluation and treatment of adult complex surgical patients who are in observation status in collaboration with a surgical care provider.  The SSU APP will provide patient care for the TCSC SSU and Pre/Post-Operative Unit.    In addition, the SSU APP will partner with the Surgical providers to provide occasional consultation and complete history and physical in the Pre-Operative Area as needed. Providers may also assist with the ASC review work commiserate with Pre-Operative Clinic Patients.

The physician-APP relationship is based on a teamwork model of shared medical decision making. The SSU APP practice includes education, clinical review and continuous quality improvement activities in addition to clinical duties.  

• Perform history and physical examinations.
• Order treatments, medications and diagnostic studies. 
• Review, interpret, and manage diagnostic test data.
• Write prescriptions for scheduled and unscheduled medications under prescriptive authority from the SSU attending.
• Provide patient education
• Discharge patients, complete discharge documentation, and communicate with other care providers as applicable.
• Participate in teaching rounds, shift sign-outs and multidisciplinary rounds.
• Provide medical care efficiently in a cost effective manner
• Maintain knowledge of medical principles, practices, standards, and techniques in accordance with UMHS policies and procedures, Medical Staff Bylaws and State and Federal laws/regulations.
• Participate in activities that promote professional growth and self-development. Attend conferences and continuing education/staff development programs to maintain knowledge of current literature.  Attend in-services, departmental and other meetings in accordance with Medical Staff Bylaws and unit performance policies.
• Adhere to all UMHS dress codes, personnel and safety policies.
• Apply Service Excellence commitments to daily practice.
• Maintain ACLS certification and competency.
• May function as a preceptor for other health care professionals.
• Collaborate with other professionals in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs for increasing clinical knowledge/skills/operational efficiency.   
• Roles and responsibilities may be periodically adjusted as determined by the needs of the Ambulatory Care Clinical Program.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The APP will have a primary reporting relationship to the SSU/Preoperative/Post-Operative Medical Director.  When on clinical duty, the APP will receive direction from the assigned physician.

• Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
• Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. 
• Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
• Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
• AHA Approved BLS
• ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).
• Current DEA registration required.
• State of Michigan Controlled Substance License required
  
   

• Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.  
• Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA). 
• Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
• State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
• Current DEA Required.
• AHA Approved BLS  
• ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center)

• Two (2) years or more of experience as an PA in an inpatient/ outpatient surgical services, Adult Emergency Medicine, Adult Observation unit or its equivalent is desired.

Hours/week: Rotating 3-12 hour shifts with 4-12 hour shifts every third week
Shift/Hours: This is a full time position with rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights;  On call responsibility as needed. 
Location: Troy Center for Speciality Care, onboarding and orientation will happen at other sites including Brighton Center for Specialty Care and University Hospital.
 

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
