Job Summary

 

The University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN), Office of Undergraduate Studies is seeking an Undergraduate Program Advisor. The Undergraduate Program Advisor will engage in the advising process for the Office of Undergraduate Studies. This position will support student progression and success. The position will perform extensive file review and will assist with monitoring the advising processes to meet the diverse needs of students and will also coordinate undergraduate events.

Responsibilities*

 

Undergraduate Student Advising (65%)

  • Conducts individual student assessments and tailors UG success strategies to meet the needs of individuals as well as diverse student populations

  • Independently manages a one to one student advising caseload, conducts advising sessions and documents outcomes in the official system

    • Assesses and prioritizes concerns raised by the student, uses this information to inform the meeting agenda

    • Assist students with the evaluation of degree minors or concentrations and career exploration within and related to nursing for long range academic and career plans

  • Interpret policies/degree requirements to recommend appropriate path forward

  • Makes appropriate and independent assessment as to when a concern is routine or requires appropriate escalation

    • Identifies and initiates referrals to campus partners i.e. financial aid, counseling, disability services, etc. based on individualized student need

  • Implement academic success strategies through individualized and group advising including identification of academic career and economical resources

                         

Degree/Program Coordination (10%)

  • Independently evaluates progress toward degree completion, builds multi term plans for example, electives and/minor sequencing

    • Determines which requirements apply based on catalog year/program rules

    • Recommend course sequencing and workload balance on a term -term basis

    • Determines which requirements apply based on catalog year/program rules

    • Reviews students? academic records to ensure students are making required progress towards degree in compliance with degree requirements

    • Assist students with licensure nationally and internationally

       

 

Academic Monitoring (10%)

  • For the assigned student caseload monitors and independently assesses all academic indicators for each student in a caseload.

    • Monitors and addresses progress reports, early alerts, attendance, grades (when available)

    • Initiates student contact, conducts interventions and maintains documented action plans

    • Evaluates the unique situations and selects appropriate interventions connecting with students at early signs of difficulty through study plans, tutoring referral and discussions of course load adjustment 

 

Policy Petitions (5%)

  • Applies established policies and standard operating procedures for petitions.

    • Works with students on petition requests, collects documentation and submit/advocates for approvals where required for appropriate form of petition. 

    • Makes recommendations to committees/administrators including rationale grounded in policy and precedent

    • Works with student post decision on the petition updating the plan as needed

       

 

Career Activities  (5%)

  • Coordinate and engage in large and small events related to student services and progression including but not limited to

    • Career Fairs

    • Career Seminar Series

    • Welcome Week Activities

    • Commencement

    • Resource Fair

 

Additional Responsibilities  (5%)

  • Use advising technology to schedule appointments, review transcripts/degree audits and early warning grades and record advising notes

  • Orient students to academic programs and university services policies and procedures, etc.

  • Help develop and maintain wellness programs

  • Meet as needed with the Instructional Design and Central departments to discuss various methods for student communication and advising

Required Qualifications*

 
  • A Bachelor's degree is required.
    Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of advising experience is necessary. Advising experience in higher education is required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency at the advanced level with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel,   Outlook and PowerPoint).

  • Candidate must have excellent communication skills, with the ability to receive and convey information clearly and concisely for various mediums. Must have very strong interpersonal, presentation (large and small groups) skills and organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups.

  • Demonstrated ability to collect, manage, analyze and prepare data for presentation to a variety of audiences.

  • Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills are required for this role.

  • Demonstration of managing multiple demands and effective prioritization of workload.

  • Knowledge of nursing or related field.

  • Working knowledge of applicable University policies and procedures is preferred.

Modes of Work

Work Schedule

 

8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; some occasional weekend and evening hours may be required.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the University Staff United, AFT Local 284 union (USU), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
