ASIANLAN 115 First year Hindi I
Credits: 4
This course is the first half of the first-year Hindi course and is designed for students with little or no understanding of Hindi. The course focuses on the developing students' proficiency in all four language skills (speaking, listening, writing, and reading) while simultaneously familiarizing them with aspects of both traditional and modern Indian/South Asian cultures that are necessary to build language competency.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Meet, greet and introduce others and themselves in formal and informal settings
- Ask and answer simple questions about date and place of birth, nationality, marital status, occupation
- Give simple descriptions of familiar surroundings and daily life using rehearsed and memorized formulae and basic vocabulary
- Express likes/dislikes and preferences
- Understand and respond to simple exchanges about daily situations regarding self, family, friendship, home, and addressing others using socially acceptable reference terms

Intended Audience:
This course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge and/or have less than the equivalent of one semester's study of Hindi at the University of Michigan.
Class Format:
Practice and drill sessions are conducted in Hindi and emphasize the ability to produce and comprehend Hindi at a natural speed. The grammar explanations and analyses are delivered in English and Hindi during the class sessions as well.

ASIANLAN 215 Second year Hindi I

ASIANLAN 215 is a continuation course of ASIANLAN 116. This continuing proficiency-based course refines and expands previously acquired language skills in culturally authentic contexts. The classes will focus on expanding vocabulary, mastering more complex grammatical structures, and acquiring idiomatic expressions. The content, supporting language structures and vocabulary will be theme-based, with a view to measuring outcomes in a variety of ways, including task-based activities that support effective communication around the theme. Activities will be conducted in Hindi and classes will be interactive.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Carry out all communicative tasks from the previous semesters with greater ease and sophistication
- Participate in extended conversations about their family, daily life, surroundings, shopping with different vendors, health and diet, travel, food, past experiences, future plans, and occupations
- Talk about their own and others' interests and seek/give suggestions/advice
- Express emotions and opinions in a culturally appropriate manner
- Describe most recent job(s), daily activities, house, and school in some detail
