50% teaching GSI (ASIANLAN 115: First year Hindi or ASIANLAN 215: Second-year Hindi)

• Lead up to four hours of recitation sections a week
• Attend course sections daily   
• Implement teaching plans made in consultation with the primary instructor of the course
• Grading students' assignments, quizzes, other tests, and roleplay activities, etc.
• Proctor exams and quizzes
• Attend weekly meetings with a supervising faculty member
• Hold at least one office hour in the South Thayer Building
• Proctoring final examinations and grading the exams with lecturers
• Class preparation: typing learning materials in Canvas, supporting course projects, helping to make audio files, etc.

Students who have not previously been a GSI for the College of LSA will be required to complete the online CRLT GSI Teaching Orientation as an online program.  Students who have not previously been a GSI for the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures will also be required to attend the ALC New GSI Orientation at 10:00-11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 28. GSIs are expected to be on campus and available to work no later than Monday, August 31, 2026, the first day of classes.

Students whose undergraduate degree is from an institution where the language of instruction is not English must have already taken or be currently enrolled in the English Language Institute?s ELI 994. The student must have a passing score of 4 on the Oral English Test (OET).
 

• Hindi Native speaker, or if a GSI is a non-native speaker, s/he should have the proficiency equal to Advanced-high speaking proficiency (at least) based on the ACTFL standard 
• Serious career interest in language teaching
• Good at Computer operations including Excel and Word files
• Good Hindi typing skills

• Can speak standard Hindi with good pronunciation and intonation
• Can correctly pronounce the borrowed Perso-Arabic (Z ??, X ??, G ??, Q ??), aspirated voiced (bh ?, dh ?, gh ?, etc.) and retroflex sounds (R ??, Rh ??)   
• Organized and reliable personality 
• Should be punctual and keep deadlines
• Prioritize GSI work as well as own study
• Cooperative and flexible

ASIANLAN 115 First year Hindi I
Credits: 4
This course is the first half of the first-year Hindi course and is designed for students with little or no understanding of Hindi. The course focuses on the developing students' proficiency in all four language skills (speaking, listening, writing, and reading) while simultaneously familiarizing them with aspects of both traditional and modern Indian/South Asian cultures that are necessary to build language competency.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Meet, greet and introduce others and themselves in formal and informal settings
• Ask and answer simple questions about date and place of birth, nationality, marital status, occupation
• Give simple descriptions of familiar surroundings and daily life using rehearsed and memorized formulae and basic vocabulary
• Express likes/dislikes and preferences
• Understand and respond to simple exchanges about daily situations regarding self, family, friendship, home, and addressing others using socially acceptable reference terms

Intended Audience:
This course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge and/or have less than the equivalent of one semester's study of Hindi at the University of Michigan.

Practice and drill sessions are conducted in Hindi and emphasize the ability to produce and comprehend Hindi at a natural speed. The grammar explanations and analyses are delivered in English and Hindi during the class sessions as well.

ASIANLAN 215 Second year Hindi I
Credits: 4
ASIANLAN 215 is a continuation course of ASIANLAN 116. This continuing proficiency-based course refines and expands previously acquired language skills in culturally authentic contexts. The classes will focus on expanding vocabulary, mastering more complex grammatical structures, and acquiring idiomatic expressions. The content, supporting language structures and vocabulary will be theme-based, with a view to measuring outcomes in a variety of ways, including task-based activities that support effective communication around the theme. Activities will be conducted in Hindi and classes will be interactive.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Carry out all communicative tasks from the previous semesters with greater ease and sophistication
• Participate in extended conversations about their family, daily life, surroundings, shopping with different vendors, health and diet, travel, food, past experiences, future plans, and occupations
• Talk about their own and others' interests and seek/give suggestions/advice
• Express emotions and opinions in a culturally appropriate manner
• Describe most recent job(s), daily activities, house, and school in some detail

Intended Audience:
This course is designed for students who have successfully completed ASIANLAN 116 or placed into it by exam.
